    Hi

Does anyone have any experience with the CE scheme? I'll be eligible for these jobs in just over a month, and am thinking of applying for some things that might be suitable. I'm just not sure that you'd get much experience from them. So is there anyone who could tell me the kinds of things the jobs involve? I realise there are different types of jobs but i just mean in terms of training, and activities do you get a lot of good out of it?

The experience you'll get will depend on the scheme, the sponsor and the supervisor. Pick something that is doing a lot of the kind of work you want experience in and remember, you get the chance to have 'off the job' training paid for you too.

One thing about the CE scheme to be aware of is that unlike some of the WPP schemes that might (or might not!) lead to a permanent, paid position in the same role, is that the CE position probably won't - but if it gives you some good experience, and pays more than the dole (which I think CE rates do), it's probably worth it.

    Hi Op

I did a CE scheme some years ago and there are huge number of benefits to them, would recommend it much more so than the WPP scheme. Like others have mentioned, go for the ones that would give you good work experience. You will work 19.5 hours a week, get a payment for that and your unemployment benefit (I think). I was on lone parent at the time I did mine and still received that and a wage from the CE scheme (it was €119 at the time). Secondly they have a budget of €500 per year for training needs, so if you wanted to train in computers, book keeping etc or anything related to the job market they will put a maximum of €500 to it. Each scheme lasts a maximum of two years if you are under 35 and three years if you are over 35, so whilst it is not permanent, it is for that period of time and the economy may have improved but at least you have work experience, training and a chance to get off the dole. I would highly recommend it.

I was told that they last 1 yr. You get you dole plus about €6 more (I think) and get no rent allowance. Therefore it will only suit people in a situation where they have no rent or mortgage payments.

They are one year contracts that are renewed each year and the maximum is two or three years depending on your age. Anyone I know who has done the scheme, including myself got the two or three years. I don't know what happens if you are on job seekers allowance, as I was on lone parent when I did it, and I got both payments, at the time I was also receiving rent allowance, this was reduced by half I think and yes I was only slightly better off but for me it was worth it, but it wasn't scrapped completely. I did the scheme nearly ten years ago so things may have changed.
