The whole movie, apart from the beginning and end take place in an alternate universe built around Jake Gyllanhall.

Its one of those movies that when you first see it you think its so baffling it must be amazing, but as time goes on, you realise its just a bit sh1t. Kelly hasnt done anything of worth since anyway.

Does have a fcuking great soundtrack though...

True, dat. First couple of times I saw it, I thought it was totally awesome, yo! And when the director's cut came out, I was like 'daaaaaamn, son. I gotta get me that shit!'

Then I watched the DC and realised Richard Kelly had accidentally created a good film and when given free-reign, exposed himself as a terrible story-teller. What seemed mysterious and worth reading into in the first place, was demystified and dumbed down upon reediting. The theatrical version of Donnie Darko is entertaining at best. The Director's Cut is absolute tripe.

Can't agree.. love the pacing, structure, superb performances and amazing soundtrack.

    One of my favourite films!

Agreed.. even the Richard Kelly / Kevin Smith commentary was woeful!

Still doesn't take away from the theatrical cut though.

It had a good angle on it in that the story revolved around Darko's point of view and how real his visions were to him (in other movies he'd be dismissed as the local loon). On the other hand, it went into teenage angst mode unnecessarily in some places. His speech in the school hall was cringeworthy and really didn't fit Darko's character, I feel.
The other actors really added to the movie, especially Maggie Gyllenhaal-she's one of those actors I always enjoy seeing in a movie
