Our Bangernomics VS UK Bangernomics

I've been doing a bit of research on this lately. Our version of Bangernomics seems to be around €1000 semi-luxobarge cars, generally of a good marque with leather, often higher-performance or big engines. The UK version seems to be 'buy a MOT'd car for less than £300 and drive until it's 95% rust'. That's a big disparity here, and I bring this up because I haven't yet seen a car in the Bangernomics of the Week thread that I wouldn't be happy being seen in.

So I ask the Motors elders: Are we really sticking to the spirit of Bangernomics in the Motors forum?*

*Not to be taken too seriously, but I am curious about the discrepancy!

Have to agree with you there. My notion of bangernomics would be to buy a road legal roadworthy car for as little as possible, but also one thats cheap to insure, run , and tax (but better again if you can get one with tax left).

Spending €1000 on an old Merc is not the cheapest way to do it - I have 2 old Mercs and they eat petrol, are relatively expensive to tax and insure. That said depreciation on them is zero at this stage and parts are usually cheap if needed.

Yeah but do we really want a thread where people post up photos of 1995 Ford Escorts and say what a deal it is? I dont think that thread would last very long.

Maybe it sheould be called Shed of the Week instead of bangernomics.

The idea of running a big cc motor on a shoe string budget is really a novelty and rarely works out.

All of my cars i've ever owned i've bought for under €1K (bar 3) and driven them untill the NCT and tax ran out and sold them on or broken for parts.

And i've never had to pay out for expensive repairs, and i dont have a motor loan and i'm curently driving a 03 Avensis.
