    Hi
I posted this in the Animal/Pet formum also but thought I'd stick it up here too as you guys might have more experience with Springers.

My 4 yr old Springer Spaniel bitch is due in heat this month. I want to breed from her as she has won at working tests and I have also run her in field trials and although she hasn't be placed, she has gotten through to the 2rd round in all 3 of her outings.
On Monday I noticed she was swollen behind with a slight sticky clear/white discharge. No bleeding. She has bled in all her previous heat cycles. Is this swelling and discharge a sign that she is close to coming into season, or is she actually IN HEAT now.

    Thanks.

she will be in heat after the bleeding cycle when the new Ovule will take place. At the moment she is getting rid of the old one.

I don't know what the white discharge is but it doesn't look healthy to me. might need another opinion on that though.

you bitch is coming into heat but the discharge sounds like an infection but it can be sorted out if you bring her to the vet and he should put her on antibiotics for a few days but if you breed her to a dog with out getting it sorted more than likely she wont go into pup i have the same problem with one of my greyhounds every time she comes around

    Hi all,

Thanks for the replies. When I went home yesterday evening I checked her again and there is tiny bit of blood so she is definitely in heat. The discharge I talked about (or tried to) was more like a dampness than anything else. I am going to make an appointment for the vet for tomorrow to get her checked over anyway before I get her mated.

In my experience in breeding pure breed dogs over the last couple of years Ive noticed some dogs having a dry heat which istn't uncommon. If the dog seems healthy and the discharge does not smell strongly or the bitch is not licking her vulva repeatedley I'd say shes fine. But then again as the saying goes "its better to be safe than sorry".;)

I have her booked into the vets for a check up just to be sure. The vet will also do a test that should give me a good idea of the optimum date for mating.

Better to be safe than sorry is dead right. :D

you are going the right road bringing her to the vet at least you know you wont run into any problems with her and just incase something do go wrong at least the vet will be after dealing with her before she pups best of luck with her anyway

the vet will only be able to tell you if she is within 24 hours of best time to mate. take note of first blood and mate at 10 days after and again at 12 days

That clear/white is no infection. She is coming into season. Best to bring her to the stud now. She won't accept him just yet but that will get the "first date" out of the way. They will know what it is all about the next time they meet 2 or 3 days later. I'd take her early next week to the stud for breeding. Better to take her to the stud than leave her there because he will be all go and she may not be ready and get injured in the process. They will tell you spot on when 'ready' is. Breed her over three days and stop when she no longer accepts the male. Good Luck!

Just a quick follow up to this post from a while back on my Springer bitch. I am happy to say that all was well with the bitch. She was in fact just starting to come into heat and am delighted to say that on Monday of last week she whelped a litter of 11 good strong healthy pups. I will advertise them on the For Sale section when the time comes.
Thanks to all who took the time to reply.
