Any ideas or suggestions are most welcome

I have 15k to play with

I want a saloon type car

A 2006 model is the oldest I will consider, but would prefer newer

Petrol or Diesel, not really fussed either way, but obviously want something as inexpensive as possible to run

Keeping the year as 2006 and you price at 15k

    I would pick a S-Line Audi A4 2.0

    or a 320d BMW 3 Series

Yes I like the BMW 3series saloon - not keen on the audi for some reason

If its the B7 model its ok. I didn't like the previous model to that myself. I had a B7 and looking back it was a smashing engine. Remapped 1.9TDi.

I like the BMW styling although they can be stingy on the standard spec.

msport 320d would be a good choice.loads of power and economy.

se doesnt look that good imo but the msport is very nice!

The new model BMW 3 series (E90) has to be the most boring looking car BMW has ever made. The rear end looks like a Mitsubishi or something and the styling is just plain awful. It's the most boring looking saloon car on the road, period!! It's probably a great car to drive alright and the coupe version (E92) is a lot nicer looking (and a lot more expensive).

If I had €15k to spend I'd buy a MK5 Golf GTI or a 2.0 GT TDi 170. Lots of them on Car Giant for this kind of money. Probably lots of Irish ones around too and I'm not sure how the prices compare tbh.

Just remembered the OP said it must be a saloon -- so I probably go for Beemer 5 series (E60) or an Audi A4.

Much prefer the 5 series to the 3 - although i thought i might have trouble finding at 15k mark

I have nothing against the octavia at all, but I just think even a 09 or 10 model looks pretty much the same as a 00 model!

Saw an opel insignia today that looked neat - although pretty sure they are not around that long

This or this should come in at under €15k with vrt paid (the vrt calculator site is down atm) if you don't mind buying in the uk. They both a got service history too so I wouldn't worry about the mileage on a diesel engine like that, especially if you intend to keep the car long-term. They should last for many, many years yet. I don't know what they're making here so it mightn't even be worth the trip tbh and just buy one here. Those two examples might even be too expensive as I'm really not aware of what they're making, just proving you should easily be able to get one for under €15k. The vrt rate on those two is 24% (158 CO2 emissions). I'm sure there's plenty of cheaper ones out there with a bit of shopping around (Irish cars too) as I just priced two on the first page of Car Giant.

Without jumping all over the bmw party. What about a honda accord? Volvo S40? Or a subaru legacy?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 311 ✭✭robjones1981

Yes the Honda accord is nice looking alright - had not considered it - anyone anything good or bad to say?

Im thinking a Passat or a Mazda 6 at the moment

.. or a Mazda 6 at the moment

...just so long as it's not the diesel (junk).

    Petrol one is fine.
