    They say
'Note: The Diploma has been submitted to the Teaching Council for accreditation.'

Does that mean it has been accredited or they are waiting for accreditation from the Teaching Council?

    What does 15/20 mean?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 286 ✭✭awny

    Pathway

Yes it is still gettin accredited but this should not be a problem. I actually did my maths degree in UL and know the lecturers organising this new course very well. The teaching council have been extemely slow accrediting it but UL are not expecting a problem with it. They have numerous HDip courses for business, Music, PE, Woodwork and languages ( already approved by the teaching council and have been running for years). This new maths course is based on that model. As for 15/20 they need at least that number of people to run it!

ah great thanks. I though 15/20 was what you needed in the exam

No sorry I was writing a bit fast there!!! Well if you know anyone that is interested let them know, only 2 weeks left to apply!

... i wouldnt worry aboiut UL getting TC creddtion..their science,PE and technology courses all have maths accredition of some sort and UL has put itself foward as a centre of excellence for maths and learning..as well as being involved with the roll out of project maths it'll be a decent place to study maths education....

Did Commerce and an Economics/Finance masters in Galway, but unfortunately I don't think that entitles me to teach Maths :(

It's really annoying as I did extremely well in any Maths-related modules in college and would love to teach Maths. This course would be ideal!

I put in an application form for this course last week. Ive toyed with the idea for a couple of years now to do a HDip in Maths so heres hoping it goes ahead.

Hey guys....wat are d chances of this course actually goin ahead do ya tink?....i applied just last week, will there be enough to make up the numbers?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 286 ✭✭awny

I rang UL today and postgrad admissions told me that there going doing interviews.... we'll know by end of next wk or the wk after if we get an interview! I presume its going ahead if they are holding interviews.... I mean if they didnt get sufficient numbers by the closing date i would think the would just get back to us and say its not going ahead!

dats cool!!...hope i get an interview now:)......did they give you any indication of how many people have applied, if there is only 20 places available?...i have applied to england nd have an interview for next week but would so obviously prefer to stay in ireland...

    Fredstar

Just read on the course info that you MAY be called for an interview as part of the selection process. So dont be worried if you dont get called for one. They might give you a place automatically without having to do one!:)

Yes. Note that this course requires you to have a degree in pure or applied maths. A bachelor's degree is the only qualification recognised by the teaching council.

I've heard that they get a 14 year old girl to poke you repeatedly with a pencil to test your anger management capabilities. If you beat the kid up before a minute of poking has passed, you get rejected.

Good luck to all the applicants!

Yea I got offered a place aswell today. Over the moon. Im from the other side of the country so Im trying to work out the semister timetables so that I can get childminding in place and to work out what weeks I'll be up here. Looks to me like the 1st semister is from the 31st august till the 18th Dec (cant see any time off here) and the 2nd semister from 24th Jan to 16th May (one week off @ Easter). TP in first semister is on a Monday I think.
Any idea if you can get the fees paid for this course ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 286 ✭✭awny

Congrats!! Were actually not startin till the 6th Sept, and our orientation day is friday 3rd! As far as I knw you have to apply for a grant to get your fees paid!

Congrats on the places guys. I'd be very interested in this course for next year. Would you be able to post every now and then about how it's going? It would be great to get some insight. Thanks

Hey just saw this thread now, I got accepted onto course too. As far as I know there was 49 applications for the 20 places.

Looks like a good course alright, although I'm not sure if I am definitly going to to do it, have til end of month to decide.

Do you know if we have to organize any of the teaching practice ourselves. I'm guessing not seem as though they didn't say anything yet and it starts in the first week, but just like to check with others.

Just had a phone call from them, they will organize it where ever really but they asked me to go into school first and talk to principal before they formally contact them.

Rang my old school. No problem at all. Every Monday till Xmas and the a 6 week TP block next year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,205 ✭✭✭cruizer101

My old school is all full up of H.Dip students so I'm relying on UL to find me somewhere, they were meant to get back to me about it but still no word.

Have my accommodation all sorted now in Limerick. Still haven't received any more info on course, like lecture times or that, I thought we were meant to get an orientation pack sometime in august, they're leaving it late enough.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 286 ✭✭awny

    Hi,
Hope the induction day went well. Unfortunately I had to cancel my place on the course this year at the last minute. Best of luck to you all. Will be interested to see what you all think of it.
