Do I need to take the theory test?

    Hi

Wondering if anyone here can help me, my provisional driving license (my third) has expired about a year I think and I have done a driving test before but failed.

I now want to apply for a learner permit(?) and ultimately take the test again but I don't know if I have to sit the theory test or what my next step is really.

I have never done a theory test before because when I first applied for a provisional license there was no such thing!

Any help would be much appreciated, thanks.

"If your provisional driving licence expired 5 years ago, then you must undergo a theory test before a learner permit will be issued."

I had a provisional when the theory test came in but never had to do the theory.

    It is what it's.

No. Your License has to be expired 5 years from the date of issue in order for you to take the theory test again. The provisional license was changed to Learner Permit in 06/07 I think. Just go to your local motor tax office with you expired license, 2 photos, driving test letter and Learner Permit application form and they'll issue you a new one.

i know this thread is 4 months old but donegalfella you said that you need to bring your certificate of failure or test appointment letter, as appropriate.
i was just on to the motor tax office in swords and i asked the lady there that i want to renew my provisional licence for the second time will i have to bring proof that i done a driving test in the last two years or failed a driving test, and she said no this will be your second provisional licence so you will not need any proof of a driving test or failure test documentation.
she said just bring my old licence and two photographs signed on the back.

is she right i'm sure she probably is seen that she works with this, any idea's on this issue. thanks in advance.

Hi, I've a smiliar question. I'm on my second learner's permit but as I don't actually drive yet and getting a car is not a priority for me yet I've never actually applied to do a test, I just renewed whenever I was told to. As my permit is about to expire again and I've no date for a driving test I assume I have to take the theory test again, which doesn't really bother me.
My question is once my permit has expired do I apply for a new one as if it was my first or is there another route I go down? Any help would be appreciated!

Hi, thanks for your help so far. Just to clarify if my 2nd learner permit has expired and I then apply for a driving test so I can get my third learner permit, then its okay to use the driver number off of the old licence in my application for the test even though it has expired?
