Question about experience

I did not know whether to post this in IT forum or not.

I work in IT and learnt a new programmming language for example PHP or C# but do not use it in your everyday work but have a great knowledge of it even though you have no experience using it in your job but have learnt it in your spare time.

How do you convience a new employer that you have a great knowledge of it or that they will even consider you for interview?

    Thanks.

Why not see if you can develop a useful app for work when you have a bit of downtime (lunches etc)? Failing that, write an app in your spare time that you can host on your own server as an example.

I was looking at CVs for a role last year, and one of the candidates had his own site to use as a reference which we could look at.

Yeah good advice there. Put up a site that uses PHP/C# and that will prove to employers you really do know a bit about it.

You could also get engaged in one of the many open source projects available.
