What would have to happen in Ireland for their to be a general election called before 2012 ?

and is there any way that the people can change their goverment before the next G.E.?

what ye think people will we boot em out before they sink this country completely or do you think there is even a viable alternative here?

also i was wondering, do you guys think it possable to get some sort of law passed that would give people more power over their government instead of the other way round before the next G.E, in order to basically make the Politicans far more accountable for their actions?

and my last question is this.... do you think that there are any "leaders of men" in this country , now i'm not talking about just politics, but i was wondering if there was any sort of visionaries left here, or has self intrest ruined any chance of that.

    cheers to all

There very well could be a GE before 2012, if the Greens walked out it would leave FF in a shaky position.

The result of that election? Well it's hard to know. FG are in a strong position for two reasons. Firstly, their plan for recovery sounds great and could well win them many votes simply as it is a fresh approach. Whether it holds water is another matter but it will earn them a few votes, that's for sure.

Secondly, FG are not FF. To anyone with a wider view on the world this means nothing but remeber that thousands of people see everything wrong in Ireland as being the fault of FF alone. Thus, FG will probably get alot of "angry votes".

Yet, I would not be at all surprised if FF were to be reelected. Before the 2007 election, 90% of the people you asked would have said Ahern was a b**tard or something along those lines. Bono even got 70k or so people to boo him at a gig in 2005. Did this indicate anything about the election, absolutly not. This is why one must be sceptical about opinion poles because most people are simply not honest about who they vote for.

As to the second part of you post, more control over politicians well that can be a double edged sword. On the one hand, you will have a government that can be questioned on everything they do. You might think; "great!, no more NAMA" or perhaps, "allright!, let's get down to reform". However you would be mistaken.

Running a country is very like a parent caring for a child. Like a parent, a good leader has to occasionally make decisions that will NOT be to the liking of their charges. Social welfate cuts would be a fine example of this. They have to happen, they will happen but the stink that cutting them will throw up will be something else. If the government could be called to task by a group of Joe Normals, then the legislation could be delayed for months to be dragged through red tape and the reform would not get done quickly enough to do any good.

Remember, human beings have a dire habit of not looking beyond what will affect them personally. Cuts always cause pain and those affected by them will generally not look at the bigger picture; either we do this gently, or someone else does it hardcore.

To finish, it is my honest opinion that nothing about Irish politics will change dramatically because of this mess. Sure, a few things might happen, FG might get in for a while, the President might flex her/his dusty powers of governance but honestly, in 30 years time Lenster house will still be full of the same class of people. Why? Because we simply do not learn.

I'm not sure there have been visionaries or leaders of men for quite some time (in Ireland anyway). People generally act within their own self interest, but a lot of the time their interests coincide with those of a majority or significant minority.

Sorry but FG are FF jsut a smaller version of them.
All TD's in the dail are the same no matter what party they are.

They all voted for pay rises, they all voted in favour of the two weeks off at easter even though Labour did raise their heads for a sec.

None of the parties have address the issue of where TD's can have two pensions ie a teachers one and a td one.

Kenny said he would step down if he lost the last election, he did not and the man has no word.

FG have no fresh ideas either!!

FF wont win the next election which is a good thing as it will shut all the whingers on here up. Unless they will give out about FG even though they voted them in!!

I think it's important that when the next election comes, people vote strategically to make sure that FF are decimated, and won't have a chance of getting back in for ~10 years (like happened with the tories in the UK). If we end up with another rainbow govt, FF will be back within a couple of years.

FF will get decimated in next election, but because FG and no party will be able to improve much on things in next 5 years, FF will get back in again.

This is key IMO. FG need to win an overall majority and FF need this kick in the balls really badly. They should then be sitting in the opposition benches for a decade+ to think about what they did.

We really need strong government and I personally would prefer a strong government that I disagreed with over a weak coalition everytime. I would like people to purpusefully punish bad governmnet with a marked swing to the other main party and not looking to vote for one trick independent ponies who don't give a toss about national issues or looney leftists who would see us back in the 50's.

FG have some good policies, not as far as I would like to see them go but something different and we need something different. The introduction of lists to the PR system is soooo important and only FG are proposing this. If we could end up with a Dail elected solely by list in 20 years, it will be a MUCH better place for our children to live in.
