    Hi all,

I am about to buy a few martial arts belts from Pakistan, the purchase is all done online except the dude wants money wired over from my bank to his.

My question is, is this a safe way of making the purchase?

I hope i'm in the right forum,

    Thanks all,
    Jon

Paypal or Visa is what I would use, I have heard so many bad reports about Western Union

Hi mate, thanks for the info.
In the email it doesn't mention western union he gave me a SWIFT code and the name of his bank.
When I saw that my bank would be sending money directly to his bank I thought there would be some come-back if it went pear shaped. Two banks dealing with each other and all that.
    Have I read it correctly?

    Thanks again.

Don't think so. Pretty sure you'll have shag all come-back. See can you pay his bank by credit card: you'll have more rights then :)

Try asking a different question and see what answer you come up with.

Is there a safe way of paying someone that I have no reason to trust in a foregin contry for stuff that I don't know even exists?

I'd have two simple answers, don't spend more than you can afford to loose or check to see if you can find any tangible reason to trust the seller.

If there is a lot of money envolved then split the purchase up, buy one or two items and see how it goes first.

Credit card is the way to go but even then you don't know if the seller will sell on your credit card details, thats the one advantage of PayPal. Money transfers afaik also have the advantage of being one off payments with no chance of the buyer getting more money but next to no chance of you getting any money back if there is a problem. Swings and roundabouts.

Thanks everyone for the advice. It's a problem alright. And although there isn't huge sums of money involved I may go for the option of buying in a small quantity first.

I will also ask to pay by paypal and see what the response is, there should be no reason why they wouldn't use paypal, after all it still goes to their bank.

    Thanks again everyone.

Paypal and credit-card. If you pay, and don't get goods, do a chargeback with th credit card. The Paypal grievances process is meant to be be sh|te :(

The reason sellers hate paypal is since they take a % of the money, I think it is about 4%, and it is the seller who is down. In germany few people use paypal, just check on www.ebay.de I once bought from a seller but offered to pay 5% extra via paypal to cover this -which he accepted.

The dude is saying Western Union or nought. He has said he has sold gear to people in Ireland before. I just asked for references and see what happens then.

You might like to suggest that if he can find a method of payment that is easier and safer for you and the transaction goes well you will be recommending him to other club members, that might provide an additional incentive?

Avoid. You have no come back if something goes wrong. It sounds like a scam to me.

Just tell us the website, it is easy to search to see if people have been scammed before.

SCAM! No need to even review the site. Anyone who refuses payment by PayPal, credit card and EFT and will only accept WU is highly likely to be a scammer

I'm starting to feel the same guys, he's very eager to get payment now.

the website for what it's worth is www.hatipex.com

Let me know what you think.

    Appreciate the help guys.

If that site is genuine, then they are very amateur. It would be the online equivalent of buying out of the back of a van. Hotmail and Yahoo email addresses on the site, wants payment through WU, I'd certainly avoid it.

Made your reply for you :)

    Azeem,

Here in the rest of the world Western Union is used almost exclusively by scam artists and con men who need an untraceable way of recieving money from dupes abroad.

Therefore I am requesting that you take your attempted scam, at least make it look a bit more legitimate and then try again with someone else who doesn't know how to use google or forums to find things out.

    Thank you,
    Jon

Paypal and credit card together would be the safest for buying (paypal are bad for selling though since they always side with the buyer) never use western union as a payment method
