Was messing on net today and saw that the Galway Bay Golf and Country club has reopened to the public. Play weekdays before 9.30 for 30 euro seems great value but has anyone here played it since it was upgraded.

I got out there last weekend for 35 euro. Price online is 60 but I say there's deals to be had there for the forseeable future. It seems to be open for two weeks from the may bank holiday, guy at work told me for 25 euro, I'll defo play it at least the once.

    Changes I've noticed:

I have to say I always liked it anyways. There isn't massive changes out there. Vast majority of holes look the same, to me anyways! First is the same except they've raised the green. 5th is a longer par 4 now, 6th has a nice dogleg in it, still a par 5. Nice new tee box on 14, right along the beach. 18th green has been moved as well. Prob more changes there but no wholesale changes

    Overall Impression:

I think it is the best layout around. Unfortunately the greens were very sandy on Sunday, they were really really slow, but I still enjoyed the course. Lots of raised undulating greens that your ball will roll off. Proper ass bunkers with steep faces on em. And on a nice day the scenery is another plus.

Presuming the greens improve I put it ahead of Galway (Salthill), defo worth playing. I'd rank it as the best in the county now that I think about it!

    hi flugel.
thanks for the reply. I was just looking at their website but couldnt find anything about May. How did you manage to get the deal for a sunday? I would of thought it was members only on a sunday. Thanks for the heads up on the greens too, I may let it go for a week or two before playing.

Place has big monies problems i'd imagine, thats how I got the deal! All I did was ring up and ask how much to get out on Sunday. I was asked if I was local. He then went on to say its a soft opening, as in zero facilites there, presume thats why he asked the question. I asked how much and he said 35, and i said yoink!

So it might be cheaper still on weekdays, I didnt enquire about that. Yeah you might wanna leave it a while to play. I'm guessing with all this lovley weather the sand aint going anywhere with no rain to wash it away. I hope they aiming to have the course in top condition for the open fortnight

Played there on Friday. The greens were well recovered from recent sanding. Hadn't played there in 3 or 4 years and I didn't feel there was a huge change from before. The 18th is very different but otherwise the changes are subtle.

Very strange to see a hotel and clubhouse left to stand empty. Members and guests now using 2 prefabs as changing rooms. It's still an excellent course but beware of playing it on a windy day. Theres a reason why the trees grow sideways.

I played it with a society and paid an entry fee that included dinner and a contribution towards prizes so I don't know what the green fee was.

I Played Galway Bay on Friday last. I called a few weeks ago to find out which day was there open day and how much were the green fees were, I was told it was 25 snots and open day was the Friday. I logged on to there web site but could not book on line.

When we got there on Friday they asked for 30 euro, I told them the story and she said that it's only 25 when you book on line, again I told her that the internet booking wasn't working. No good, we had to pay the 30.

I also forgot to pack my trolley, so I ask for a tee bar for the club trolley, I had 3 euro in my hand she ask for 5. Five fecking euro for a tee bar.
I said "I don't want to buy it I only want to hire it for a few hours!!"

The course it self wasn’t too bad, the ninth green was hollow cored on the front, and the back of the green wasn’t. Pin placement was on the front edge.

It took us (3 ball) four and a half hours to get around. Painfully slow players on the front nine. There were five yanks playing together three holes ahead of us. No sign of the guy that’s usually there telling people to hurry on.

Still in all it's a find course but just because times are hard thats no excuess to charge the punters extra.

I had the same problem with trying to book online, and told the girl that in the office and she charged us 25.
Its open week this week, course is in great nick apart from the 9th green which is spiked.

just curious if anyone has signed up to the golf academy in galway bay or know what it's like... i.e. what does that entitle you to? are the balls free? I heard it was 300 for membership of the academy which I thought is a bit steep. I live within about 10mins drive so thought it might be worth trying for a year!

    Cheers

I live nearby and I haven't heard of this academy. Anyone know if there's anyone leasing membership out there next year?

Just rang there about the academy membership and it's closed for the year. All your man said was to email in December regarding membership for the following year and wouldn't give me any info regarding details. That's the second time I've been fobbed off... i called down there about 2 months back and they wouldn't even let me have a look at the academy grounds..some inside info would be good if it even exists??

They probably don't know what the future plan is. Whole thing seems like a giant mess TBH. Clubhouse sitting idle while prefabs are used as changing rooms. Hopefully they can sort something out, I'd love to get membership there next year as long as its not too expensive.
