Self Employed entitlements

I have been self employed since Jan last year. Luckily I worked most of last year and have been living off reserves for the last few months.

I know its popular to say self employed people have no entitelments but is that really true. I have no income now.

What does means testing take account of? Do I have to use up all my reserved cash before I go to Social Welfare office?

I worked PAYE up to dec 2008 and claimed some payments (about 6 weeks) last year. Does that mean that I still have stamps left and would be entitled to JSB.

I don't have a P45 from my own company as I don't want to sack myself from my own company.

I didn't officially sign off, I just stopped collecting the payments when I started my contract. I couldn't stomach trying to get through.... then waiting on hold..... then blah blah blah.....

Will this cause me any problems.

I intend visiting the Social Welfare Office but would like to be forearmed and don't want to waste my time if they tell me come back when the reserves are gone.

    Thanks for any help.

I've been self employed since June of last year.
Business is terribley slow at the mo, so I applied for Job Seekers Benefit and was just told this week it has been approved.
I had no problems as I was in full time employment in 2008 paying through PAYE, as were you.
They base your credits on 2 years previous (so 2008 in your case), so you should be just fine.
Pop down to your local office and have a chat.

Best of luck. Hope things pick up for you soon

My experience as Director of a LTD Co in applying for FIS, I was adjudged to be self employed. May be different for other benefits, but dont know!

Thanks everybody. I was in the the Social welfare this morning. I need a P45 to claim the balance of my stamps from 2008 and I have some reasonable prospects of picking up projects in the next month so don't want to do a p45 for myself. Therefore I'm told I'm into means testing.
