with 2 weeks until you go mate youd better get cracking on booking up in B&Bs. I recommend you sit down with a map and plot a route... i could rhyme off some nice places to go and a decent drive as ive been all over Scotland (im scottish) but your best bet is to a) get the car as you say, b) plan a route based on popular tourist bus routes c) book up B&Bs on that route.

Obviously youll know yourself how far youll want to be driving day to day but plan for what seems like a 50 mile journey to turn out more like 100 due to the twisty roads in the highlands. Thats not a problem mind you because stopping for breaks is so feckin beautiful and welcome. I dont know how much the B&Bs are mate, its not peak season so you could be in for about 50 quid a night or maybe a wee bit less... Scotland is the home of the backpacker hostel and B&B so you will have lots of choice.

Ok as for the route...i recommend you do a regular - up the west, down the east or vice versa. Up the west means starting off in glasgow, heading up towards the Glen Coe range toward Fort William and the Great Glen. Along the way youll find lovely places like Calendar, Crieff (home of possibly the best fish and chips ive ever had), Loch Lomond, Ben Nevis, Loch Lochy, ...allll the way up to say Eilan Donan castle if you want to go up that far (almost to the Skye Bridge) ....

then head down the east - fire over to Inverness from Fort William, youll find places like Loch Ness, Urquhart Castle, Glen Affric... head down the A9 to the south and youll see things like Blair Atholl, countless ruined castles and generally just an amazing 180 mile trip from Inverness to Glasgow through nothing but mountain ranges (the cairngorms), Pitlochry, Perth etc.

Now, thats just a rough idea of the route I'd take but you might need more than 7 days, thats a fairly hefty drive so have a look on google earth, pick a few B&Bs and I would recommend hanging about up in Inverness for a few days just to get out onto the road toward aberdeen and exploring all the wee beach towns, castles, distilleries and drives out there. Heading down the A9 from Inverness to Glasgow takes 3.5 hours so it can be done in the blink of an eye...the main drive being up the west (the west is the best baby!)

Hope this was of some use....sorry i couldnt be more elaborate on B&Bs...
