question about plaque

this just popped into my head now regularly when i floss or whatever i would get little hard bits which iv assummed is plaque. this particularly happens if i dont floss for a while but this has led me to wonder what exactly plaque is? is it as i thought food that has rotted or whatever or is it actualy pieces of your teeth…

plaque is the soft stuff, food that hasn't been cleaned away that's feeding the bugs, also known as biofilm. after a while, the salts in your saliva cause it to harden to become calculus. at this stage the bugs in it are dead, but there's still plaque/biofilm on the surface that'll do the damage.
