Honestly, you probably should have booked it months ago. Are there any hotels left at this stage? All of them will be veeery expensive, it doesn't matter if you are in the city centre, if you get something on a train line you will be fine, the service is great.
Munich itself wouldn't have a mad nighlife after the tents close (ie you go to the oktoberfest all day and will be wrecked by the end of it!)
We went for the opening weekend. it was crazy busy and lots of fun. It calms down a little after that though and you shouldn't have much trouble getting served etc.
edit, this is the hotel we ended up in. very close to the oktoberfest site: http://www.starwoodhotels.com/sheraton/property/overview/index.html?propertyID=146

I only booked accom and flights last week but there are some hotels left within 15/20 min walk of the festival.

a question I have is -I am going for a few days during the last week with 7 mates and from what i can gather its to late to reserve seats in the tents ,so is it much hassle getting into tents during week days.we plan on going down early morning on the wed, thurs fri of the last week
