Hi all, as stated in the banner, I havent a clue really about cars. Currently have a budget of about €7000 and really need a decent car. Would like a saloon and something with umph, ie 1.4-1.6. Really don't want anything too old, 04 on really if possible. Any ideas will be greatfully appreciated!

You would get a nice BMW for that money. 2004/2005

    Here's one

http://www.carzone.ie/search/BMW/3-Series/316-316I/201005196807370/advert?channel=CARS but there are loads of them.

Carzone have 527 results in Saloon for the year 2004+ and a budget of €7,000 - €7,999. I put in the €7,999 because you can always haggle them down.

They might all be too large engined for you but just showing that there is pretty much an unlimited choice out there for someone with your needs.

Looking through carzone and you could even have a 2005 Jaguar for that kind of money. The choice is huge.

I can assure you that no 1.4 saloon in your price range and very few 1.6 saloons in your price range have any umph at all.

Well, he said he wanted something with a bit of uumph.. he also said he wanted a 1.4 or 1.6. Those two are not compatible, so I suggested a 1.4, the others suggested something that's a bit closer to having a bit of uumph, but realistically he'd need a 330i or similar to have some umph.

Where did he say it has to be 1.4 - 1.6? He said he wants something quick and the only quick cars with engines that small are hatchbacks. Saloons are too big and heavy to have oomph with an engine that small.

Can you not read? He says he has "no idea" which means people here can suggest the "RIGHT" car for his needs.

7k, small displacement, bit of umph... sounds like an RX-7 ;)

sorry should clarify, changing up from a 1lt so anything from 1.4 on is umph for me! Preferrably something up to 1.6, as dont want something which eats petrol. Saloon meets my requirements space wise. I'm not fussy. Saw an 04 Passat with 70000 miles for 7k. Sound reasonable?

Sounds a bit dear to be honest. I wouldnt pay that for one. you will often find there is very little difference between a 1.6 and a 1.8 when its a big car like a passat. The 1.6 will have to work a lot harder than the 1.8 just to pull the cars weight around and it wouldnt be surprising if the 1.8 is actually better on fuel than the 1.6. I have a 1.8 Volvo s40 and that is considerably better on fuel than the 1.6 version.

    here

Again, where does it say "this car can only be 1.4 - 1.6 as I am not willing to suggest any other options that may be presented to me"? And if a 1.8 will be just as frugal as a 1.6 then why not recommend it to him?

Don't even consider an E46 316 Beemer, completely uninspiring engine carrying around a large body that you paying large tax on. If you are going to plump out on a BMW do it in a 320i at least and enjoy a very fine engine which is infinitely better than the 4-banger in the lesser ones. Road Tax will be similar enough (316i/318i - 1895cc vs. 320i - 2171cc) and you'll have that gorgeous Straight-Six to listen to. :)

You would get a very nice 1.6/1.8 Alfa 156 for that money too. Despite what everyone says they aren't unreliable, it's just that people don't know how to maintain them. You would be hard pressed to find a similar car with as much character and ability as the 156. A 1.9 JTD powered one would be a very nice car. Much better than a daysul Focus or a lot of the other boring scrap suggested. :pac:

Thats not nice unless underpowered scrap is deemed "nice".

    A bit of ummpphh in a 1.4 - 1.6 - I won't even bother getting into that!

As you can see from the pictures of the above Accord the owner has really looked after it well. I particularly like what he's done with the exhaust tips!

Here's something with a bit more umhp!
