Lenovo or Dell

I'm looking to buy a new laptop and have narrowed my selection down to 4
    Either a dell studio 15(i5, 4GB Ram, 500GB HD) or Lenovo Thinkpad Edge(i5, 4GB Ram, 500GB HD)

or if I am going for something a bit cheaper it will be either of these

    A dell inspiron 15(i3. 4GB Ram, 500GB HD) or Lenovo G550(
    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T6600, 4GB. 500GB HD)

The Thinkpad edge is my favourite but quite a bit dearer, if I thought there was a big difference in quality though I would go with it.

The main things I use laptop are for internet and photoshop, watching tv. I tend to multitask alot so can be a bit tough on a pc in general. Would love an idea of whether the spec I am going for is ok and whether there is a big difference in quality between lenovo and dell

There is a BIG differance in build quality, especially shell rigidity, between the studio and thinkpad. A fairer comparison would be between the dell latitude series and the thinkpad. personally i would go with the thinkpad.

Thanks David my preference is for the thinkpad too, I'm just wondering is the price difference worth it

I have been using thinkpad for 6 years.

Edge is far different than most other Thinkpad series.

If you have used thinkpad series before, you would not like Edge.

I really miss the old IBM thinkpad. Lenovo is not the same as IBM.

Just let you know if you have got a friend in the US, you can use Lenovo outlet.

But your friend has to send it to you. That site has advantages and disadvantages.

The advantage are cheap and cheerful!!

The disadvantage are warranty and refurbished. The warranty is around in the US.

I hope this thread helps you.

As a long time thinkpad user(5 years now - own R52 and T61) :D i'd say either G series or Edge are the 'real' thinkpad:

the G series is very Lenovo(like the SL series) and Edge is fair play for the idea but it feels like it is for light user, i dont think they should be included into the real thinkpad range :p ie careful the money you are spend on them since they are not supposed to be high price laptop like Thinkpad. Edge is actually marketed for the people who wants thinkpad's keyboard and stability but dont want the 'boring' look.

it is still the same design team behind thinkpad which is leaded by David Hill,i did alot of research before i decided to buy my T61 in 2008.the quality of thinkpad is still there i am pretty sure(love my T61!!)while nobody can answer it was better with IBM or not but one thing for sure is Lenovo did lower the price of Thinkpad made them more affordable by us non-company subsidized buyers.

Thinkpad is the business!if you are looking for a tough machine to torture with insane multitasking and you take it up and down everyday but not heavy gaming performance, thinkpad is THE laptop.

Thanks for the replies. Hmm I would have thought the Edge was very similar to the the other thinkpads just a bit nicer to look at. caps424 I don't think the outlet would be an option for me, some great machines there though. seraphimvc I had a T61 for work that I really put through its paces. My multi tasking is a bit insane so something like the thinkpad for me. I'm not sure I can go back to a Dell. The edge 15 is working out about 830
Any other brands worth thinking about in this price bracket for the type of spec I am looking for?

    Asus perhaps.

Actually I wouldn't stick to specific brands, consider everything. There's some great laptops out there nowadays, especially in your budget. Don't get too hung up about 'x brand is better than y', just try to get the best laptop you can for the money.

hah!then we both know why exactly we wont go back to dell/generic laptop :D

the reason that i said the Edge is for light use mainly because they are firstly released with the CULV range processors which is slightly powerful than the netbook Atom so it is not intended for heavy duty:P and it didnt even come with a optical drive. but the advantage of it is it has the thinkpad's superb keyboard+its build is gonna be more stable/solid than the generic laptops( but not as thinkpad i guess).

and i just realised that you are talking the 15' Edge?!comes with i5?!i read some reviews of edge 13 when it first announced

so i search around online for its review and found the news of Edge 15 is fairly new and not much review around haha.while i'd say if it comes with an i5 cpu then it is absolutely capable of heavy duty and plus that keyboard ,800+euro is very tempting indeed.i got mine for 900+ back then.

so if i were you i will wait abit for a detailed review from websites like notebookreview or from the buyers, caused' an i5 maybe capable for heavy multitasking but we are not sure if the build of Edge can handle the heating/long hours heavy duty etc as it is a relatively new product.

if you didnt bother with the keyboard, need an optical drive(i am not sure if edge 15 comes with optical drive since edge 13 are not),of course you are free to look at any laptops that you think their specs can handle heavy duty, good brands like Hp,toshiba, asus, or even dell makes no big difference, try to look at their business range laptop i'd say. most laptops will show up some problems after 2/3 years but it is very common nowadays anyway, of course this doesnt apply to thinkpad and i believe you have that first hand experience of using t61 :D

or alternatively, you can get the R series thinkpad which is cheaper than the T series, or try ebay/online store for the older model which the retailers dont sell them anymore.
