Depends on which 1.4 engine you go for.

    There are 2 types,

first is the old 9-DSi engine with 83hp (0-60 14.3 seconds)
    claimed 5.9 l/100km combined, 4.9 extra urban, 7.6 urban
    emissions 139 g/km 156 tax

    then there's the new i-VTEC engine with 100hp (0-60 13.0 seconds)
    claimed 5.9 l/100km combined, 5.0 extra urban, 7.3 urban
    emissions 135 g/km 156 tax

    Wow...that is incredibly slow.

sales man told me i would only get 45mpg out of it...i thought that rather low. my main driving is to and from work, 20 mins each way, and mostly short trips of that nature. just thought i would get more mpg from it?

Short trips are where you usually get lower mpg. From a 1.4 petrol hatch 45 mpg is excellent if possible.

Short/urban driving that sounds about right.

It is a 1.4! It's comparable to others in its class, but none of them are gonna set the world on fire!

I'm driving a 08 1.8 at the moment, and it's excellent on fuel. Was averaging 5.2l/100kms on long trips. Not fantastic this week cause I've been in traffic.

In all fairness 45mpg is about as good as you will get for a 1.4 litre petrol hatchback. If you want better then you should be looking at the Hybrid or diesel Civic.

to put it into context, everyone slags the 1.6 Avensis off because "it's slow" but it's a full 2.3 seconds quicker to 60 than the Civic.
