Using it right now! Works great.

I've been using it myself for the last couple of hours and really like it. Very quick in comparison to safari and like the opening page which is very like the normal safari where you can save your most visited sites

Wow! Its so fast! Using it now to post this fine message.
Maybe Apple could learn a thing or two from the Opera guys here.

I'd glady pay a few bucks for this app.

omg, its incredible, worth the embarassment of saying omg, its faster than my laptop if i had one

Just downloaded. Its quick !! How do i import my bookmarks from safari?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,790 ✭✭✭cornbb

Very pleased to see this in the App Store. Its nice and quick alright, very nippy over a 3G connection. Scrolling/zooming isn't as smooth as Safari though, and I'm a bit nervous about accessing secure websites when I know they'll be proxied to Opera's servers for rendering...

This is much quicker then safari over 3g and edge so far anyway
    Edit
just tested it there , took 9 seconds for safari to open this thread , opera mini only took 3

Lightening Fast. Now i have to figure out what to put on the links screen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,034 ✭✭✭mad muffin

It might be faster than Safari by a second or two but the scrolling and zooming is pretty poor IMHO.

    Just downloading it now. Thanks!

    How do you zoom?

Pinch and double tap don't do anything

    Edit:
OK to answer myself, this is weird. Zooming and pinching doesn't work in landscape, I always browse this way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,986 ✭✭✭Spazdarn

Very surprised this got through to be honest... downloaded it last night... yet to give it a go

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,933 ✭✭✭keith_d99

Fast alright - some nice features (like find in page).
Not sure if it will be my default browser though - zoom is patchy to say the least

    Anybody use Google HomePage??? (http://www.google.com/m/ig)
Looks awful in Opera. Might be that a lot of sites seem some customisation to look right in Opera

    Good start though!

It doesn't have any kind of zoom in landscape, it is always in zoom mode in landscape and it portrait it has fake pinch to zoom, i.e. It just does the same as if you double tap the screen.

While it does seem a little faster, pinch/zoom and copy and paste are not as good as in safari. Back to safari so.

I was never a fan of Opera in the first place and I know this is only the first version, but ugh, this is crap.

It's nice and fast and all (conditional on Opera's servers). But the interface is sh*t. Slow, unresponsive, fails to register presses, crappy zoom, poor rendering, no autocorrect. I got an iPhone to get away from this crap. And then there's the privacy issues.

Anyway, I'm sure many people will love it, and it's nice that there's an alternative to Safari, but I'll be sticking with Safari.

Is it a full time replacement for Safari? In it's current state no.

    No pinch to zoom.
No easy way to scroll to the top.
    Scrolling is not as smooth.
No ability to zoom in landscape (landscape is always max zoom).
    Videos don't work.
    Finger presses don't always register.
    Images are fairly compressed.

As of now I'll use Opera Mini if I need to look something up quickly and I only have Edge coverage.

Opera Mini for speed, Safari for everything else.

Yes I agree, not noticably quicker, and is a bit sluggish, at least thats my experience.

And the zoom / pinch etc is not a slick as safari, Safari for me !

For me, this is far quicker than safari over 3g. In a test i ran it took 6 seconds to load the full version of irishtimes.com compared to 30 on safari. Its all about the speed for me

Are they caching the web traffic they're side and optimizing it etc before it hits my phone?
If yes I'll be back to Safari

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,213 ✭✭✭culabula

So far all attempts to sync with Opera Link have failed, so I can't see myself changing my iPhone browsing habits. It's a little bit unwieldy even if it is fast, but can't handle certain websites, notably TVCatchup.

Yeah, the Opera server caches and compresses the page. Everything goes through their servers. That's why it's so fast (or slow as the case may be).

It's great if you using an ordinary handset on PAYG and every KB counts, but most people with iPhones have a decent data allowance/add-on, etc, so I can't see most people being too bothered with this.

Can I not disable this? I'd rather have that choice otherwise Opera can sling

    Yes. It's called Safari. :P

Seriously though, I don't think so. It's kinda the whole point of Opera mini.

Is anybody having trouble using opera? It won't open any pages for me! Safari and everything else web related is working! Any ideas?

Stopped working earlier today: internal server error.

I'm not gone on it so far. Poor zooming/scrolling and the overall unresponsiveness of the UI are spoiling the experience and the rendering isn't as nice as Safari manages. It took me about 5 attempts to tick the "Remember me" box on the front page of boards.ie. Google Reader, which is implemented really nicely on Mobile Safari, is actually slower on Opera, presumably as it has to through the whole fetch/render thing every time an item is expanded or collapsed. Too much precious screen real-estate is used up by the status bar, address bar and toolbar (although fullscreen mode is pretty nice).

I think I'll stick to Safari, but I'll keep Opera on the device. I can see some of the features that Safari lacks, eg. find-in-page, coming in handy sometimes.

If they can clean up the UI and improve overall responsiveness I think they could have a serious winner on their hands. But Safari still reigns for now. Maybe Apple agree with me and that's why they felt ok with approving it :)

Exactly. The only reason Opera Mini was approved by Apple at all is that the App doesn't render the web page itself - it's done by Opera's proxies. Which is why neither Opera Mobile nor Firefox are available. iCab is available, because it uses Apple's WebKit as the rendering engine.

Also, it won't play audio links inside the browser, which is disappointing.

Agree with most of the comments. Abit dissapointed in it tbh. It is very quick alright but I hate the copy paste and not being able to quickly jump to the top of a page is a pain too. Will defo hold onto it and hope some updates will fix some of it's issues. I may choose to use it over safari when running on Edge but for the moment Safari #1, Opera #2.

really liked this at first, but the really poor zoom, and loads of missed presses on links has me gone back to safari
