focal monitor placement

i have the solos , and was messing around with placement .

i put them on some soft foam to isolate them and the bass has become fuller - but the funny thing is the woofer is now alot more at ear level , with the tweeter more slighlty above eye level and im hearing alot lot more midrange .

i had them set so the tweeter was at ear level before , but it seems the tweeter is quite good dispersion wise. but the woofer is actually quite directional for midrange .

and transients are alot snappier and clearer.

is this standard for monitors or just the focals ?

they sounds a hell of a lot better now and they were great to my ears to start with .

i had to re measure the low end to check it was ok modally
and it was- so all in all im alot happier with them now.

im the same with my mackie 824s. i used to have the tweeters at ear level but i got new stands that left them just slightly above ear level, about a half inch or so, and they sound much better to my ears. mixes seem to translate better aswell.

I think you might be getting your thinking mixed up. Midrange will always be directional, it's source is immaterial.

Bass frequencies are omni directional sounding because the wavelengths are so long , so it's not the woofer that make them so.

The Solo6 Be active monitors are designed for near field monitoring and should be placed at a distance between 1 and 3 metres from the listener, pointing towards the listening position. They can be sitting on the console top or placed on appropriate stands. In any way it is recommended that the tweeter is at a height from the floor approximately equivalent to that of the listener’s ears. If required it can make sense to place the speakers upside down so that the previous rule is better fulfilled.

ive tried them on thier sides and the steroe image seems a bit wierd
cos the tweeter is on the outside

so put them upside down might be a better option ?
that could be a worth trying .

my thinking isnt mixed up, I just didnt realise exaclty how directional the mids are - its something ive obviolsuy just found , and im quite surprised by this.

Do NOT use monitors on their side.

    TRUST ME!

    No I can't ....

Unless you give clear measured scientific evidence to back up your hyperbole.

The manufacturers say you can ...

wow, I dont think I deserve that - is this your idea of "banter"

you aren't a very nice individual are you Paul ?
Pity for someone with your knowledge and experience to be so bitter

I was considering upgrading to go for the Focal twins , at some stage

I will not be able to consider the company you are associated with given the attitude you portray here to beginners like me

I wonder do they know this is the way you respond to people ?

Well, some do, but others (not all hf speakers are ROUND remember) absolutely DON'T.

I've also been told you've essentially create 4 sound sources instead of 2.

From my own experience, the chance exists that flipping them on their side WILL change the percieved depth of field.

I think it's a bit absurd to say that I need to back up my assertions with scientific proof, when you aren't backing up yours.

I respect your knowledge, but I also have knowledge and experience.

You shouldn't be so quick to judge... Or at least find a less confrontational way to disagree. IMO of course.

here's a bunch of people discussing this:

are all the people that claim it caused problems crazy?

I am too, ask anyone .

I also answered your query with verifiable information.

I can't help with the lack of sense of humour.

How long are you at it now Tony? I don't think you're a 'beginner' !

I'm quoting the manufacturer. We are official Focal Dealers here in Ireland.

T'was you making the definitive statement.
The appeal to 'Trust me' is never enough to have a point taken seriously on any worthwhile forum.

I was querying it - no harm in that is there ?

That's how we keep Boards (relatively) free of waffle.

Ahhh can't we all just get along?

The main reason I hang in here so much is the lack of drama.

PB, sorry if my response ticked you off.. We probably just have had different experiences and I have NO interest in arguing.

DDT, you've always been nice to me, I'm sure the Internet just made all of this seem more aggresive than it intended to be.

    There is it ok now?

    ;)

Sorry man, I wasn't JUST referring to Focal monitors; I apologize if that wasn't clear.

Lots of monitors have shaped horns/tweeters. They're designed to be placed vertically. Some monitor manufacturer even make h and v vers or the same model.... It's not cool to do it with all monitors IMO.

    That's my whole point.

I trust you about Focal though.

Of course we can get along !
    I'm only asking for clarification.

One might counter the arguement with the fact that the most famous monitor in history, the Yamaha NS10m is designed to be used with the tweeter on the outer edge.

    Fair enough.

I think it's important to make points as clearly as possible in order for readers not to be confused with mixed messages.

The internet is full of 'contrary information' without us adding to it.

i thought you were decent paul ,
but this aint the first time you have been derogatory in your responses.
particulalry to certain posters who are not obviously in your golden circle .

we dont all have your experience , and you as well as i know its not humour you are employing here.

and yes i am a newbie in this field , obviously the question would not arise for someone of experience - i learned something new to my surprise and was checking if it was the case .

Tony, we're all big boys here.

I'm sorry if I upset you.
