my laptop (HP) just shut down completely and I cannot get it to start again. It is plugged in and the power is getting to it (the light is on where you plug it in) but pressing the power does nothing, it is just dead.

    any ideas?

Was it plugged in all the time or did you let the Battery run out

it shut down due to overheating, unplug it take out the battery, open it up and remove the cmos battery for 15 seconds.if you dont know what that is its the silver coin lookalike thing you would find in a watch

make sure you dont touch anything else as you may be full of static electricity.put it back together and you should be grand.

my dell studio did that before. you need to reset it to get it going again.

    Slow down . Breath slowly

Made sure the Battery in not empty .

Also Maybe it just needs to coll down due to a vent been covered

    All will be well :)

Most definitely. If it was sitting, on, in the sun for a time i can see it easily overheating.

count yourself lucky that laptop makers have made them to shut down them selves if it gets to hot:)

also id recommend you get the hoover and suck out the fan vents etc to remove dust i had my laptop just over a year and you wouldnt believe the amount of dust that gets stuck in these things
