    Hi Folks,

The mother wants to get rid of the '98 punto that's been giving her a few problems as of late. She says she doesn't want to spend more than 1k but I'm trying to bump up her budget a bit, as I don't think she'd be getting much of an upgrade for less than a grand tbh. I was thinking maybe €1500?

She'd like to keep it small, a hatchback, preferably nothing over 1.2 for tax purposes. Maybe a '00 onwards.

I've already suggested the likes of a Fiesta or Micra. Also I think for the budget a Clio is the nicest looking car but not sure about reliability.

Though I'd ask the folks on boards for their expert opinions. :p

Fiesta 1.25 would be the one to go for. there are a good few for sale for around 1500.
Avoid the 1.3 engine if you can.

The Renaults do get a lot of stick, my other half has a 00 Clio
fine little motor, she's had it over a year and a half, no problems.
Look for one thats minded, bring a mechanic when viewing though.
    That or a Toyota Starlet.

Clio is good for a Renault, probably their best car at the time.
Not as cheap and plentiful as the Ford though.

Was in this exact situation 2 weeks ago looking for a car for a friend.
    Ended up with a mint 99 Fiesta 1.25 Zetec 5dr for 1100.

Find a few within budget models your ma likes the shape of and check these sites:

For the Clio, as an example:
    http://www.carsurvey.org/reviews/renault/clio/
"A solid, reliable, uber cheap runaround with its own quirky va va voom appeal"

    http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/renault/clio-1-petrol-1991/
"Good: Comfortable ride and refined around town. Clio Williams is a real firecracker.
Bad: The rear arches can rot from the inside out. Reports of auto transmission failures."

Hard to beat the Fiesta to be honest but for your mom I would also suggest looking at the Nissan Micra:
