Hey all, people keep asking me who my band sounds like, and I have no idea. I have asked some people I know and can't get a straight answer....

So maybe some strangers can crowd-source me an answer :P

There's now two kind of finished recordings and one very much work in progress.

    http://www.myspace.com/theriottapes - 1 song
    http://soundcloud.com/the-riot-tapes - 1.5 songs

Any help would be wildly appreciated.

    Seriously like.

    Thanks y'all.

Not one to give out praise as a rule but really like Satellite (the Shoehorn mix). Shades of PJ Harvey there. Well done.

    Wow!

    Thanks a ton!

    Praise is good! :)

These are just demos recorded in my kitchen... I'll be recording a full-length which will be released in the UK/Ireland/US this fall...

    Anyway, thanks again!

good morning Riot Tapes. I listened to the tracks there. Not mad about the first one, not enough energy for me but really liked the second one, "Not if but when". I don't know what age you are but it sounds like a post punk/early 80's band called "Magazine". A really cool band from England with Howard DeVoto on lead vocals. Great use of keyboards and guitar which can be really hard to do if not worked on. If you are half as good as Magazine then I'll go and see you defo. Good luck and check out Magazine.

    Thanks man!

I know the first Magazine record quite well and am a big fan on the Buzzcocks!

    Thanks for that sweet comparison.

And yeah, Satellite will probably end up a smidge faster in the end. I know the energy thing... though some people respond to it really well at this tempo.

Maybe I'll pull a "Thinking About You" and record a punk version ;)

Thanks again, I'll re-listen to some of the other Mag records this week. And yeah, half as good as Magazine would be no small feat!

Stay true to the Shoehorn version of Satellite. Wouldnt change it that much. Again obviously add some bass to fill out the sound. Keep us posted.

I def will root for it... you know labels... but I chose that tempo... I like the slowness of it!

And sure, I'll keep you guys posted...

Are you personally on, say, myspace or soundcloud?

First track reminded me quite a bit of the one Spiritualized album I've heard, Ladies and Gentlemen We are Floating in Space; the little effects around the edges and the slow pace of the track with the big instrumentation ... all sounded quite "space-rock"-ish (the title indicates this too of course :P).

Your song deviates a bit from the style when the arrangement becomes more pared down and the distorted guitar becomes prominent. Really like it :)

Really like Satellite. Wasn't into it at the start, probably cos I've been listening to music in the car all day driving, but by the end I really started to dig it. Put it on again then. It's a grower. Tempo is perfect. Love the 'spacey' effects in the background.

I heard that song you were working on that you posted in the MP forum. Like that too. It's got potential. But maybe it's a bit generic/straight forward. I can't really tell as it's obviously a work in progress... Good tune though.

As regards who you sound like... dunno. I definitely hear a bit of Spiritualised wrt Satellites , but not with the other song. Dunno. Riot Tapes?

thanks.. I think the song will get more "special" when the vox are added...

and the proper drums.... right now it's some production, but mostly structure and sounds...

    :P

so, I totally get the generic thing.

I gotta really remember to say spritualized to people!

The vox are rough, the drums are still temp, things are missing, it's not mixed. etc.

    But

    Would still love feedback...

Not thin skinned... feel free to trash it. :P
