None of them,T3 light is the one you want for stalking. Any of the ones you mention would be fine but you dont want a big heavy rifle when your stalking, after 3 or 4 hrs walking it gets pretty heavy even with a light rifle. I use a Sako 75 hunter its grand for stalking.

I also think a varmint barrel is a bit heavy.
At a push, a varmint barrel chopped to 20" in an a very light stock
with a light scope. For targets one can swop to a heavy scope and
maybe even to a heavy stock.

i'm used to lifting & carrying

What rifle have you been using up until now??

Try them out at a few gun dealers to compare weight.

carrying a heavy rifle around with you may not affect you when stalking but it more than likely will affect your shot by your arms being tired!

It's also worth noting that the balance of a varmint build is awful if you intended taking a standing shot, or were ever in the position to do so.

I actually meant in general on a varmint build, even on laminate stocks. However, if the butt of Tikkas are hollow, then it would be even worse. If I had to pick one from the list, it would probably be a 20" tactical, but I'd take the hunter, personally, or the lite stainless if a synthetic is desired. I handled a lite before and just wasn't too impressed with the stock. Felt funny. Doubtless I'd grow to like it, but initially it didn't do anything for me.

Of course, all arguments about balance and handling go out the window im a hurry if you plan on adding a massive, heavy scope and a heavy moderator, so it may well all be irrelevant. Currently I'm favouring the handling with the bipod alone, and a lighter scope would be preferable. If I were starting from scratch and not confined to what I could find on the second hand market, I'd be inclined towards a Tikka Hunter with a decent sling and a good piece of lightweight glass. If you really need a massive objective, maybe something like a 3-12x56, or if you don't, perhaps a Swarovski z6i in 1.7-10x42, for a good general purpose scope for everything from driven game to longer shots on deer. That's the scope I'd choose for a lightweight all-round rifle, to be honest, as huge magnification isn't required at sensible stalking distances. 10-power is more than enough to burst clay pigeons way out past 300m, and if you can do that, you don't need more for a deer rifle. Add a good sling and carry ear plugs or cans yourself and you're sorted. Moddy just mucks up the handling, may well end up not using mine, though it's still a debate in progress.

    hi badshot.
i'm in the process of chousing my self. i have a tikka t3 tactical .223 already and its a cracker.
now i want to change my 6.5x55 for .308 and i have looked at all 3 of the models that you mentioned .
the supervarment has alot of the extras that the tactical for less money. i was quoted €1200 for the supervarment today and €1900 for tha tactical also today in 2 different shops so big difference
i have had better quotes for the tactical in other shops but the were not sure if they could get their hands on one for me they are harder to get.

i think the question is which one do you prefer as all 3 will perform very well . 1/2 moa is not out or reach once you get a round that suits you.

i'd luv to know how you get on as i am in the same boat.

Just to add my 2 cents worth of bull.

I have the Sako 75 laminated varmint in 308 with a Bushnell 6-24x50 tactical scope. All up weight 9lb max. It has the synthetic stock on for stalking so that drops the weight a little 1lb+.

When stalking I use a gunslinger belt attachment to take all the weight of the gun on to my waist, so NO hurt shoulders and I can carry the gun all day. But nearly puke when dragging a kill. But then I'm an old fart and smoked to much.

My thoughts are I use the gun for stalking 5/6months of the year and then bring it to the range for the other 6 months where I want a gun with a bit more weight in it. That's why I got the varmint version. For the range I will put the laminated stock back on.

Horses for courses get what YOU WANT not what other people want you to get.

The Tactical is a nice handy rifle, but then again, as the lads say, it won't be me carrying it.
