Surround Sound problem on Movie Files

Hi, ive got a video file of District 9 and its a big size file. It says its got 5.1 surround but I cant seem to get the surround to work on my ps3 for this. DVD's/BLurays/Games all work fine in 5.1 for me as I have an optical cable running from the ps3 to setup.

It is in 5.1 as when the movie is playing and I press select, in teh top right it says "5.1 ch. 48hkz".

Its an MP4 file btw.

its an mp4, thats the problem, it cant contain surround sound,

But it says in the top right on the ps3 menu: "5.1 ch" or is that to be expected? If I burn it to a dvd will it be in 5.1? Or can I convert it to .avi or whatever and have the same picture and get it in 5.1?

PS3 only supports 2 channel AAC audio, Xvid+AC3 if you want 5.1 sound.

Any software I can use, free preferrably that will allow me convert to like xvid and keep the picture quality nearly or just as good, and keep the 5.1 surround sound?

What do you mean the sound does not work, does it play but only the front speakers as if it was 2.0/1 or is the sound broken,distorted or not present.

The sound plays in the only the fron 2 speakers, so 2.0 im guessing, like when I play a cd.

Anyone have any more help? Ive got a ac3 5.1 sound track now and ac3 works with my setup, so is there any program that will allow me extract the 5.1 surround sound of the ac3 video file, and the video of the aac video file and like put them together?

I had problems with sound from my HCS before with things like Heavy Rain. I went to the sound outputs on my ps3 and unchecked DTS and it works perfect now. Hope it might be of some help to you
