strange noise (air conditioning)

    When I turn on ignition I hear a strange noise like a vibrating motor/fan coming from what it appears to be from the air conditioning unit on the passenger side of car. The noise disappears when I switch ON the air conditioning, and it comes back again once I switch OFF the air conditioning again, Im not sure what is causing it.

    Any ideas?

    Car is an Audi A4 diesel 1.9 tdi.
