New Skirmish site in Rathfarnham

    Hi All,

would like some feedback on this one please...

I have recently been offered the opportunity to use a plot of land in rathfarnham for airsoft.

    Info about the land:

    2 acres in size approx

unlevel surface with lots of high grass and hiding places

    several hills with good cover

in the centre of the site there is a half built house. It contains several rooms with no roof, doors or windows. (would make a good killhouse)

I would like feedback on a few things in relation to this:

Would it be suitable for skirmish?

What games could be played there?

Would you attend? if so, when would be the best time i.e weekday evenings, saturday or sunday..

    how often would you attend?

what times would you like to play and for how long?

what would I need in order to get it started?

any info on insurances would be helpful?

I am not looking to make a fortune out of this, just to cover costs and above all provide another safe and friendly location for Airsofters to skirmish.

If anyone who has knowledge and experience of running a site would like to be involved then let me know and we can discuss it.

    thanks guys,

2 acres is tiny man, I dunno how many people you're expecting, so you'd want to limit your numbers (i.e. more than 20 people on that would be just awful).

Rathfarnham is a built-up area, have you made sure you can't see any part of the site from a public road, residence or anywhere where people are? That's vitally important, you can get in a lot of trouble for that.

Similarly, there needs to be proper parking, etc. Being on a bus route wouldn't hurt. A big part of the reason sites are having issues getting going is you need a car to get there.

yes it is quite small but it is all uneven surface so it seems bigger than it is. it would be suitable for games similar to the style played on the call of duty 4 game "shipment". The numbers will have to be small for each game but its better than nothing. And thats what there is in that area at the moment. the nearest, as far as im aware, is bray.

there are only two houses that can see on to the land and they will be made aware of what is happening. it is well off the road so there is absolutely no chance of the public accidently seeing it. It is very close to a bus stop on the churchtown road so it is convenient. It does have space for about 10 cars or so.

@ gerrowadat - thanks for your feedback

The south side needs more sites. What I would suggest is speaking to your local Firearms officer and superintendent from the start, they have overriding sign-off on your site under the new act. Get there feedback and opinion if they would even consider granting you permission to operate before investing too much time and effort.

Also speak to the IAA, they deal with this kinda thing an a regular basis, and can offer allot of advice.

first off i agree with fayer get permission to go ahead with planning from gardai first. its the superintendent of the district not the firearms officer. they just deal with gun licences. two acres is grand. when you think of how small the warehouse was but it was brilliant. a house that can be used for cqb even better. it is the one thing that the country is missing a true cqb airsoft site. since the demise of the warehouse. if you put more buildings and such up around th place it could be amazing. cqb is great and really is good fun. i think the site is a great idea. try and post a few pics if you can

The FO is actually the person that you will meet on site, perform the physical inspection of the location and make the recommendation.

Sounds good always wanted an airsoft site near me. Cant input on the insurance or anything like that but can say depending on prices can have about 4 lads attending a month.

yes that may be so but it is the superintendent you meet in the station and the person who makes decisions the firearms officer may only be a garda or sergeant. And it is worth pointing out the super directs a member to inspect a site if he can't it is not necessarily a firearms officer. Lets not start a debate and thread spoil any more. i was just pointing out to the person who started this thread who will make or break his idea. is that ok.

    thanks for the help guys.

@Fayer - some excellent advice there many thanks.

@Snakedoc - Thank you also for equally excellent advice.

I will get in touch with the super first as I always like to go to the top of the chain anyway. If I am referred to the FO I will let you know how it fares out.

Anymore info would be helpful. I am having trouble finding an insurance company who will quote me. any suggestions?

Talk to the IAA - They have an insurer familiar with Airsoft, can even get you a discount if you're up to the IAA standard when you open.

    Hi, hope this site happens!!
I live locally and a lot of friends play too and we are all around Rathfarnham/ Dundrum area, the numbers would be no issue!

SNAKEDOC, Missing factor? Have you been to the site called 'Vacant' in Naas yet? It is one of the biggest Airsoft CQB sites in the world!!! You should give it a go :) Has an outdoor arena too and i believe the guys who used to run the warehouse are running Vacant ;)

Presumably (cause i just checked the date on your last post there :o) you have heard of it cause i think (think) they opened before you posted the last comment but I'm not sure if they did or didn't!

Really hope this site gets the go ahead would be class having a site within walking distance!
Good luck with it! I will lend a hand if you need to get some structures built, just drop me a PM! :)
