Storm is hail on earth for jogger!

It's a headline from the Sun online (I came across it with stumbleupon right ) about some fella who was jogging and got caught in a hail storm with hail stones the size of golf balls. There's a pic with the story and the lad looks like he got battered!
    See here
Four college students in the US town of Grinnell near Des Moines, Iowa, had to be taken to hospital with suspected broken ribs after being pelted by the huge chunks of ice.

They were rescued from the side of the road — from a ditch they were using for cover — by motorist Pat Crawford and her husband who drove them to safety.

Mrs Crawford was so shocked by one of the boys injuries she snapped pictures of the welts which covered his body.

There's nothing like being picked up off the side of the road by strangers and letting them take pictures of your naked body....

That chap looks pretty beat up. Hail stones are horrible enough when they're normal sized as it is.

Hailstones in the American Mid West ?

It's like floods along the Shannon. Lucky it wasn't a bad hailstorm by local standards.

    http://uisevereweather.pbworks.com/DesMoines
Hail, when formed, provides massive amounts of damage. In Des Moines, hail typically occurs 3-4 days a year. Damages usually are divided into two categories: agricultural and structural. Since many of the largest hailstorms occur in the Plains and Midwest, agricultural damage is much more common. Hailstorms can damage vehicles, buildings, and the occasional person. Even though agricultural damages are more frequent, their losses per year in the United States are roughly equal, with about 1.5 billion dollars worth of damage a year. (30)

One of the most costly hailstorm events that the United States has even been apart of was the Tri-state hailstorm, which happened to affect Iowa as well. During mid-April of 2001, a supercell thunderstorm developed over Kansas and moved it way east (63). A series of thunderstorms, hail storms and tornadoes developed throughout the Midwest (63). The worst tornado that hit spanned across Kansas City, Missouri to Des Moines (63). The hailstorms produced golf ball to baseball-sized hail that were 2.5 to 7.5 centimeter hailstones (64). The path of the storm ranged from Kansas City to Effingham, Illinois, which is over 350 miles long (not to mention 6-15 miles wide) (64). After the storm, damages were assessed to be just fewer than 2 billion dollars, becoming the ninth most costly weather event in United States history and the costliest event that included hailstorms (64). There were three factors that caused the colossal property damage by the storm: the enormous size of the hailswath, the continuous production of hail by the storm, and the fact that hail fell over Kansas City, Columbia, and St. Louis (64)
