Has anyone tried the new Italian where the Grill and Grape used to be? I think it's called Pompeii

Yes I had a meal there with my parents last week... Not bad but not mind blowing either. Its run by a chef who used to be with the Italian Connection. Pasta, pizza, steak, chicken... all standard fare and pretty tasty.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 212 ✭✭Laura_lolly87

Its run by the guy who used to be the manager of italian connection. Had a meal from the early bird menu, got a salad and a steak for less than €20 and it was delicious. I cant wait to go back again. :D

I wonder, with this ash cloud approaching, will calling it Pompeii go down as a very apt name!

It's a great place to eat! esp with the early bird menu. Have a chat with the owner, Mario. He's sound and treats repeat customers really well with little extra and freebies...

Was in there last weekend. Have to say Mario does it even better each restaurant he opens. The food was great... Restaurant looks great also..

Finally got to eat there last night

    Menu is nice and varied

Wine menu is pretty good too

    Service is great

    Waiters' costumes are inane

My Mother and Father know the owner since he had the small resturant across from the old supervule. Said it was really nice, and of course, knowing Mario gave them a few perks :P

don't suppose anyone knows where abouts 'Mario' is from in Italy?

Anyone thinking of Pompeii for Sunday lunch! BAD IDEA!

Ordered two steaks veg and pepper sauce..... The food was not cooked fresh meat was grey and chewy, god forbid I took Gran there her dentures would have been ripped to shreds. The baby potatoes were drenched in water and fat and you could squeeze the fat out of them and veg dry and hard.
Two dinners and one glass of wine 46€.

I'm shocked that a restaurant could serve something so simple so horribly wrong, and next time Pompeii wipe the skin off the reheated pepper sauce thats inches thick before you serve it! Will definitely not be back!

Why did you not bring this to the attention of the waiter / restaurant manager?

Most people seem to only have good things to say.

Personally I find it insulting that someone who won't open their mouth to bring something awry to the attention of their server in a restaurant, then shouts about it on an anonymous message board.

Damn it - if it was so bad, then the restaurant WANTS to know about it there and then. They can then make sure the error is rectified and if necessary take an item off the menu.

If you can't be bothered to let them know, then it is your fault that the meal was so bad and your fault that you feel bad about it.

In answer to your question about bringing it to the manager, we did and all they said was sorry you feel this way

Kind of speaks for itself, they dont care about customers and certainly dont care about about the way they serve there food.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,786 ✭✭✭slimjimmc

When did you complain to the manager? Was it,
    a) as soon as you discovered the grey chewy meat, soggy fat drenched spuds, hard dry veg and sauce with skin on?
    or
    b) after you drank the wine and ate most of the meal?

If the food was as bad as you described there's no way I would have eaten what was served. The waiter or manager would have been called over and the food would have been making it's way back to the kitchen for replacement. Failing that, I would have been making my way out the door without paying a single cent.

However if you only complained near the end (thereby denying the restaurant an opportunity to rectify the situation) I can understand the manager's response as it may appear to be either a minor dissatisfaction (worthy of an apology which you seem to have got) or simply an attempt to engineer a discount.

People need to learn to complain as soon as a fault is noticed, no point doing it afterwards when it's often too late.

I asked 3 people who have been to the restaurant what they thought of pompeii and 3 out of 3 were fullsome in their praise.

Now, I do know that a head chef is not always on duty (even they are entitled to a day off) and it may be that the issue is a one off on a bad day. But in general both here on boards (and they're fussy feckers here!) along with many others only have positive comments about the restaurant.

    hi there,
to be honest we only complained when we were leaving, no we didnt eat all the meal, i am not sure anyone could of it was so off putting.
We said our peace to the management and left.

by the way this was our 2nd time back. we said that we would give it another chance as our first experience was much of the same.
needless to say i will not waste my money in there again.

I am surprised to see all the positive remarks about Pompeii.
I myself had a bad evening meal there recently, I did complain but I felt that waiter did not care and manager was not in restaurant. The replacement meal that was given to me was not much better than what was complained about, compared to the other restaurants in town Pompeii does not score well. Although the pasta is ok, meat and veg dishes are horrible and lots of my friends have said the exact same thing.

Sorry but , who are you ? after your first comment I was shocked , really shocked and the second was just the icing on my cake. First of all you should think about either ; getting a good set of dentures for your poor grandmother , god bless or tell her to eat soup which in the restaurant is absolutely delicious , this would avoid her being such a fussy cow like yourself .
I know the way they work in that restaurant and I have a very good knowledge on restaurants. All the staff in there care about the customers , thats a fact , They are driven by a Manager who has nothing but the care for all the customers . Don't talk bull , it's people like you who should avoid restaurants and should go to fast foods instead , that way you wont need to communicate and critisize because they are the ones who dont give a damn about their customers . Fish and Chips it is , Don' worry your grandmother is surely not going to complain on a big greasy burger made with dirty fingers .

Happy Christmas and watch out for the bones in the turkey.

Ps 46 euro for a steak and two drinks , wow , count yourself lucky , Thats cheap .

How do you know the soup is delicious if you have never been there? If you'd been there, you'd know how it works.

I also have been there twice, and it's ****e. From orders not arriving, to mould on the desserts*, I won't be going back.

    * When brought to the manager's attention, she said "Oh, it was only made the other day" - well, duh! that's why it has mould on it then!!

Did I say I have never been there , read my comment again , obviously you cant read properly or something . I have been there more than many times , actually not enough as I am now far from that little village called carlow.

Some people like making up things , such as yourself and your very name used for boards.ie : I mean who is going to listen or believe , in any context someone with a name such as "testicle" .your not in a right place here , so keep your sentences inside your trousers and change that hilariously stupid name your using .

You don't know the meaning of attack , It's a little different . no insults intended , simply a real and valid prospective on an indecent comment

i remember commenting about this restaurant not too long ago when someone asked about lunching there. But i didnt give too much detail because things could have change.
I, yes, JuJu, another person that do not like this place.
Had lunch there around April. Food was ok. The person that greeted us wasnt very nice/polite. Its very hard to tell you why i dont like it since its like half a year ago!!

I would go again to give it a second chance( i believe chefs are just human and the main chef could be off that day). But seems like it hasnt improve??

btw, two steak and a glass of wine for 46euro is consider cheap. Not pricey at all for dinner.

Juju why do you think testicle made that up?i dont know, why are you so sure?Do you work for them? Seems very defensive fo you.. if you do work for them then try listen to complaints and correct errors. Happy Days for everyone

The only indecent comments that my untrained eye can see in this thread are yours.

Why so defensive? Do you work in Pompeii?

Am shocked at the aggression from JuJu!

Quite simply JuJu, I have eaten twice in this restaurant both service and food was poor, returned a second time to give the restaurant a chance. Described the meal as it was given to me, a paying customer who has no problem giving credit where credit was due unfortunately not possible in this case, obviously this is shared by more than one person!

Learn some forum respect! Voice your opinion without aggressive insult to other members!

thought i replied to this thread previously. but we went for dinner there about 6 weeks ago, food was crap, and had to send mine back, my veal was a tough as an old boot. they only had mash and no other choice of potatoes, and whilst they refunded my dinner did not seem too concerned about it. I for one will not be returning there

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,382 ✭✭✭Fishtits

Was brought there tonight, stopping over, off my normal patch.

Good service, good food, but espresso tasted burned.

Overall I'd have no probs recommending.

We had our Christmas staff night out there on Friday night.

I love Italian food and thought the food was nice. 11 of us agreed that the starters and mains were lovely (especially the starters, which were huge!) I didn't have dessert but those that did had no complaints. The waiter, an Italian guy, was warm and funny and on the spot when drinks needed refilling.

All in all I'd have no problems going back again.

Went there on Sunday night for my birthday treat.
Wife had a pizza that a Chigagotown frozen would easily beat.
I had the steak which was nice but the veg was poor.

Won't be going back in a hurry.

went to pompeii for first time last week. The food was amazing, service was great. Owner came out and spoke to all the tables for few mins which I thought was a nice touch. Will def return :D

Just back from a very tasty meal in Pompeii restaurant. The meal was cooked perfectly, reasonably priced and the staff were friendly and helpful. I just hope that it gets enough business to stay open.

I posted about Pompei in 'best dinner in Carlow', never realised they had a thread all for themselves... :)
I love it too, and go there as often as I can, service is super friendly, the food, while unpretentious is quite good and tasty. I think the value, given the quality, size of the portions, friendliness and the views over the river is second to none in Carlow.
And the owner, Mario, we simply don't make Restaurateur like that anymore..:), always have time to chat at the table, often offering a glass of prosecco :D ... or garlic bread :D:D

Reading the strong negative comments (and testicle's (what a name..) sarcasm..) I really wonder why people sound so upset at their bad experience. If Pompei was a top-notch, expensive and arrogant place, I would understand, but given the simplicity and obvious genuiness of the place, I wonder what is the real motivation behind this...

    anyway, we're probably all shillers....

Hey, if anyone is interested, Pompei has a website up now, the address is www.pompeirestaurant.co.cc

A lot of low post count posters coming here promoting Pompeii...

I haaven't been back, and I won't be going back, since they served me profiteroles with mould on them, and when pointed out, there excuse was "oh, it was only made on Thursday" - this was a Sunday, wasn't even an offer to exchange them.

I have no reason to promote Pompei. I have been there many times and enjoyed their food. I heard the website was up and decided to share it with anyone else who might be interested.

You are of course entitled to your opinion, and as you had a bad experience there , I don't blame you for not going back. I too am entitled to my opinion, so please don't dismiss it because I have a low post count. Also just because other people might enjoy the restaurant, it does not make them 'shillers'.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,473 ✭✭✭✭Super-Rush

Ok first off this thread is for ANYONE to post their opinions on Pompeii restaurant.

Secondly there are three mods who keep a close eye on what goes on here. We don't need or want anyone having their say from the backseat. The report post button is there for a reason so use it. Any more of this crap will result in lenghty bans.

If you have a problem with this you can pm us and discuss it further

I've been to it a few times. It's _far_ better than when it was called "The Grill and Grape". The lady who ran that was pure ignorant.

however the current management is from the Italian Connection and I loved their menu / food. Might end up there again tomorrow night for a retirement party / dinner thing.

You are indeed correct, the profiteroles incident stemmed from a previous visit to the establishment under previous owners, when it was the Grill & Grape. Now that was a terrible place altogether.

I've only been to Pompeii once, soon after it opened, and wasn't very impressed.

Well, I think it is therefore grossly unfair for the new owners, don't you think?
You might be disappointed, ok but to post several times about these profiteroles on the pompei thread, that's limit dishonest IMO
