I would reccommend Romper Stomper and Chopper also. And a film called Walkabout, don't think anyone has mentioned this yet, it's one of my favourites.

Samson and Delilah in the cinema right now if you want something on the big screen. I've not seen it but it gets good reviews.

Edit: On a similar theme, Rabbit-Proof Fence

    Read my Lips
    I've loved you so long
    L'Enfer
    Paris
    Paris Je'taime
    Swimming Pool...
    Mesrine
The beat that my heart skipped

All are French, i just know the names in english. Movies mentioned by others on the thread are great too. Read up on Irreversible before renting though, it's pretty graphic, might not be for you.

    messrine, its a two parter!

Diving bell and butterfly is brilliant.

nearby, try Cinema paridiso, italian film...

Entre Les Murs is critically acclaimed but I found it slow-moving and boring. I abandoned it about half-way in so it might have changed pacing later on but there was no hint of an actual plot forming when I switched it off.

La Haine is a fantastic film, especially if you liked City of God. Mesrine is also a good French crime film.
I think I might try and watch A Prophet soon.

Leon is a terrific film with a French director and French lead actor. Sure its set in America but it still has all the hallmarks of French cinema so I think it counts!

Would agree that many of the films mentioned so far are worth seeing, one that comes to mind that hasn't been mentioned already is Shine.

Romper Stomper, Army of Shadows and Battle of Algiers.

Taxi is another good one from him.

I can't believe that Crocodile Dundee 3 has not come up on the Aussie list, highly underrated.

Out of the Blue is a great piece of cinema. You'll pick it up for pennies and it's well worth your time.

If you like Florette and Manon, you'll like Le Gloire de mon Pere and Le Chateau de ma Mere.
I don't think that they've made La plume de ma Tante into a film yet!
The Spirit of the Beehive is worth watching, its Spanish.
Years ago I watched Elvira Madigan, a Swedish film, and was impressed, can't remember what it was about, but the scenery was lovely.

There is a trilogy of french films all telling aspects of the same story in different styles. It's quite well done. Directed and written by Lucas Belvaux, who also stars in the films.

    On the Run (Cavale)
An Amazing Couple (Un couple épatant)
After the Life (Après la vie)

    Also known as 'Trilogy'.

A good french film.....'Switchblade romance' a little dated & a tad bit bloody.

good call, Walkabout is a fecking amazing film.
Chopper is savage but its like Eric Bana peaked too early, he doesn't seem to have found his form since.

the Mad Max films are classics also in my opinion also.

Ascenseur pour l'échafaud (Miles Davis soundtrack)

    Alphaville

    Anyone mentioned La Balance yet?

If you liked the visual dynamic of Delicatessen: La cité des enfants perdus

Some early Luc Besson, a bit of 'arty' (even slower in pace than The Road!) apocalyptic whimsy.

I liked it as a kid, probably would find it dated if I watched it again.

    Le dernier combat

Anything with Anna Karina in it, but that's just a fetish, rather than a recommendation.. :D

les choristes, charming little French film that does for school choirs what dead poests society did for poetry. Does lay the sentimentality/whimsy on with a spoon in some places but the performances are good and the music is wonderful.

Les Choiristes is a great film, feel good and great music...

    Haute Tension aka Switchblade Romance.

    Martyrs.

    Frontieres.

    Ils.

L'Interieur aka Inside is just excellent, but not for the faint hearted.

(Yeah they are all horrors/thrillers, but the French do them so well!)

    As for Australian film...

Romper Stomper is excellent. I know its not Australian, it's from New Zeland, but you just have to see "Once were warriors". Unbelieveable film, really worth checking out.

The Piano is just great, really powerful look at sexual taboos and gender roles in society. Tis an Australian / French co-production, so hits both bases :)

Been a good while since I've seen it, but I remember liking Somersault, plus it got great reviews at the time. Coming-of-age story if I remember correctly, Abbie Cornish is fantastic in it.

French wise, I think most of the best have been mentioned already. Films by the likes of Michael Haneke - Hidden, The Piano Teacher and The White Ribbon are my favourites - and Jeunet/Caro (Amelie, Delicatessan etc..) tend to be some of the most interesting by contemporary directors, and A Prophet, Meserine (particularly Killer Instinct), Diving Bell and the Butterfly and The Class (on Sky Movies Indies every so often) are some of the better recent ones.

If you're looking for some classics, there are an awful lot of great French New Wave films. The 500 Blows, Breathless and Weekend are fantastic introductions, although Godard and al. tended to get madder as time went on, and not always to the audiences' benefit :pac: The Three Colours Trilogy is one I've been meaning to rewatch recently, well worth checking out - wonderful thematic trilogy from the early 90s, with some stunning performances and a good insight into French society (films are based on the three colours of the French flag, and the themes they signify).

Some of the best animated films of recent years are French too, particularly Persepolis and Belleville Rendezvouz.

A Cry in The Dark - everyone who has some idiotic opinion on the Madeline McCann case should watch this first
    Rabbitt Proof Fence - depressing
Galipoli - early Mel Gibson film about World War 1
Rogue - guilty pleasue giant croc film

Has anyone seen On the Beach? It's supposed to be quite good.

I've seen no mention of Le Samourai, so I'm gonna throw that onto the list. It's absolutely one of the coolest films ever made. And one of John Woo's favourites. Although it's nothing like his films. Even if he does want to remake it.

I went to see On the Run but had to leave half way through because the people I was with were bored and wanted to leave! I was very annoyed at the time and have regretted it ever since. I have just about forgiven them by now ;o) Havent seen the other 2, mainly because I only knew them as 1, 2 and 3. That makes it a bit difficult to ask for them in your local Xtravision!

Will go and investigate the matter further now.

This is an excellent film. It by the same director who made "A Prophet" and the masterful "Read my Lips".

+1 on Johnny Ultimates recommendation of Somersault. Both Abbi Cornish and Sam Worthington's first step into being majorly noticed. Beautifully shot and good story. The acting is superb.

For a French one, watch A Very Long Engagment. Same director as Amelie and also stars Audrey Tautou who played Amelie. Very nice film with a brilliant cameo by Jodi Foster.

The Castle, Aussie humour all the way through (Kath and Kim style!), although the ending is a bit too saccharine to be truly Aussie

I bought this DVD a few weeks ago, and watched it last night, annoyed to see it on TV tonight :pac: Very good film though - the concept could easily have dipped into overly broad sentimentality, but the film shys away from easy solutions and simple emotions. Full of interesting characters and complex morals, definitely worth a watch!

    L'appartement was good.

French mystery film that was out in the 90's, messes about with structure a good bit as far as I remember.

Vincent Cassel is in it so that's always good.

well speaking of french how can we forget the great Gerard Depardieu, yes he's done a few stinkers but he's got a few classic's in his long career.

Les Valseuses - depardieu's first major role about two lads who aimless harass and assault women, steal, murder, and alternately charm, fight, or sprint their way out of trouble. great film with which also features the debut of isabelle Huppert.

Maitresse- Depardieu stars as a common thief who breaks into the home of a Professinal dominatrix and helps her train her clients. He slowly falls in love with her. great performance from him in a very good film.

Loulou- starring the great Isabelle Huppert along with Depardieu as he stars as a layabout as she adandon's her bourgeois friends and her steady reltionship for him.

Last Metro- Truffaut Ceasar winning film has a award winning performance from Depardieu about a tha theartre group in occupied Paris.

Danton- a great performance and great movie set during the French revoultion well worth checking out.

Jean de florette- this was already mention.

Cyrano de Bergerac- probably his greatest peformance as the titled character
