Hey,does anyone know any place that would repaint frames in their original styles?
I found a pretty nice Raleigh road bike in my grannys shed and the frame is pretty rough!

Tallaght powder coat have a good rep and will do two tone colour schemes. They will also break down your bike and rebuild it.

    1) completely strip paint of frame with paint stripper. there can be NO paint what so ever.
2)sand down frame till smooth, 500-600p wet and dry
3)Apply primer to frame i reccomend plastikote metal primer (available form woodies).
A.thin even coats, 5-6 over a series of days. i did two coats (20 min dry time between each coat) a day over 4 days.
    B. sand inbetween day with 1000p-1400p wet and dry. use wet
    C. thoroughly clean frame after sanding
    D. ensure frame is dry before sanding
4.Apply lightest colour if doing two colours. in my case white. apply again 2 coats a day exactly like the primer. ensure to sand inbetween and clean after.
5.mask of the areas you want to be the colour you just sprayed. in my case white.
6.apply final colour exactly like previous coulor and primer. sanding etc...
    7.apply decals if any.
8.now apply clearcoat or overcoat. i reccomend plastikote clear super. (i tried others but it melted my decals and paint so learn from my experiences not your mistakes, itll be much more relaxing :D) apply like previous coats but with 10 mins dry time and DO NOT SAND. the only sanding you will do is on the imperfections like drips and fingerprints etc... when you have sanded imperfections apply clear coat over them again even if it was your last coat.
    9. leave to dry and harden for no less than 4 days.
    10. polish with boat polish (not necessary)

before applying overcoat makesure paint is not glossy, sanding will take care of this. if it is glossy it will not work itll start to crack and wrinkle and melt the paint.

ensure you your frame is clean before any painting.
    hang frame by seat cluster.
makesure to mask of inside of the bottome bracket headtube and seattube
    apply paint evenly and lightly.
    hold can 25-30cm away.
i reccomend montana 94, montana gold or montana premium or hardcore you can get this in all city records

    or the board room

any question big or small about anything please ask itll help everyone

Golfanatic, thanks for this, it's very helpful.
Can you tell me, for a standard steel roadframe, how many cans of spraypaint would you need for one colour only? Also, I know certain primer colours suit certain colours, but does the colour of the primer have a big effect on the colour that the paint will come out?
I have a can of grey primer i got in Halfords, and i'm thinking of painting the bike the Azul Europa in the Montana 94 range, as it's pretty close to that at the moment and i'd like to keep it similar.
    Thanks.

im not too sure if there is much of a colour change but i do know that the primer i used turned out great, i used 2 cans for the frame but made a mistake on the fork so i had to buy another can so 2/3 cans on average
