iPhone unlocking Criteria with Vodafone & O2

It is pretty clear to me the criteria that O2 apply to unlock an iPhone. You can have a contract one unlocked straight away and you must have topped up by a minimum €150 on the speakeasy number associated with a prepay iPhone.

I cannot find the rules for Vodafone iPhone unlocking. I know with non iPhones you can get the Contract phone unlocked straight. Also with Ready to go non iPhones you must have a minimum top up of €127 to qualify for the unlock code.

They are only out a couple of weeks on VF, hard to see why they would before the 18 months.

They have the customer committed for 18 months and they will unlock other phones. O2 apparently will unlock for contract customers. By the time Vodafone unlock the current batch, they will be obsolete. It's one criterion I would consider when comparing networks.

And how long did it take for O2 to unlock the iPhones?

How long was the exclusivity deal though. I only have an iPhone since dember with o2 and it was unlocked last month

Only after it was announced that VF were getting it. They refused categorically to unlock any iPhone after 18 months before that.

What about it? The had the exclusive contract, and because there was no competition, refused to unlock phones that had seen out an 18 month contract.
Absolutely wrong no matter what the circumstance when you consider what an iPhone cost over 18 months. Then the snivelling twats start unlocking it the minute there is competition introduced to the market.

Ok silly question, but I have about 6 months left on my O2 contract for my 3GS.

    I presume I can't get it unlocked?

I got mine unlocked last month. I was only 4 months into the contract

So do O2 release you from the 18 month contract??? (If so, then they must be mad as it cuts off a guaranteed revenue stream)

Theoretically you could change phone or provider at any time - but you would still be liable to pay your set bill for 18 months

No, O2 do not release you from the contract but will unlock your iPhone before the contract ends! :)

Thanks! I presumed as much. In that case it's hardly worth getting it unlocked. Why would you when you still owe O2 a bill every month?

In case you travel abroad and wish to use a local sim card is the main reason... :) Or if you wish to sell your iPhone should you upgrade or wish to use a different handset.

Vodaprobe won't be unlocking any iPhones for a very very long time. According to the head tech support guy he thinks it's going to be a minimum of 6 months before they (Vodafone) get the unlock codes but I'd say more like the full 18 months. The funny thing is that Vodafone RTG contract allows you to unlock your handset after spending eur127 on credit in the previous 6 months or somewhere around that figure but not for the iPhone!
