Apologies if this question is already asked.

I have a 1Tb external hard drive almost half of it is full, mostly with films. At the moment if I am using my laptop connected to my tv to view these films on a large screen. Recently I bought a PS3 and was hoping to play the films through it. However it seems the hard drive needs to be formatted to Fat32.

Is it possible to do this without deleting everything on the hard drive?

    Nope, not possible at all

Converting FAT to NTFS is a piece of piss, but it just doesn't work the other way around

    /edit
Might be worth a shot with a program like partition magic mind you
    * Speaking as someone who lost irreplacable photos thanks to partition magic, I would strongly advise against using it for something like this!

thanks. Is there a way to split the hard drive so that any new files going onto it are formatted in Fat? But still keeping the existing files.

If you're using vista\w7, right click on computer icon > manage > disk management. Right clicking on the drive there should give you the option to resize the partition (it can take a while for it to complete!)
When that's done, use a program like swissknife to create a FAT32 partition and you should be in business

another easy option is stream the stuff from your pc/laptop over your wireless if you have it, install this bad boy http://code.google.com/p/ps3mediaserver/

plug hard drive into pc, run ps3mediaservder on pc, turn on ps3, youll see new green triangle type icon on xmb
then just go to the path of your movies

    ie: dsane1PC>g:>videos>transformers

and it'll suck the movie off your harddrive and out your telly !
    magic :D
