Changing Dentist mid-treatment.

    Hi,

I've been going to a dentist for the last few months. The prices were reasonable at first but they are getting jacked up each time I visit. They are now charging double what I was originally paying for a similar amount of work. I feel I might be getting ripped off and I want to find a new dentist. The problem is I now have 2 temporary fillings. Could I go to a new dentist and ask them to remove the temporary fillings and put in permanent ones, or will I just have to continue with my current dentist until the teeth in question are finished?

edit: I don't want to discuss the price issue, just the treatment options. Thanks.

If you feel you are getting ripped off then bring it up with the dentist. If you have temporary fillings it may be that the decay was deeper than originally thought and now needs more work that was originally planned. Or the dentist may be waiting to see if there are any problerms related to the nerve of pulp of the tooth. This happens sometimes and is nobodys fault and I would say the dentist is just being prudent and cautious. It should be discussed with you so you are aware of any changes in treatment and costs.

There should be no clinical problem changing to another dentist if that is what you really want to do. Any dentist can complete the fillings but you would the have to pay for another examination and maybe xrays so it might cost more in long run.

Johno is there any chance that previous less expensive treatment was carried out when PRSI scheme was still in operation, now that it is gone, treatment may be more expensive because dept social welfare is not paying part of costs.

It's possible that the PRSI situation is part of the problem, but the whole country is hurting financially. Without being too specific, I am barely employed at the moment and my last visit to the dentist cost me more money than I made that week, for less than an hours visit. That's not something I can sustain, so I have no choice but to shop around. And the dentist knows this, I mentioned it already and I have no future appointment booked.

    Thanks for the input guys/gals.

maybe mention to the dentist your situation.Ask him/her to start off with the most urgent procedure and take it from there. You owe your dentist nothing so if you're unsure price elsewhere. Limerick is well stocked with dentists.

    Best of luck
