Just a pity Andy Lee didnt get this shot because on that display last night we would have another European titlist!

So how did you see this one go??

Here is my card - I scored Darren Barker first and then Affif Belghecham

    R1 10-9
    R2 9-10
    R3 10-9
    R4 10-9
    R5 10-9
    R6 10-9
    R7 9-10
    R8 9-10
    R9 9-10
    R10 9-10
    R11 9-10
    R12 10-9

    I had it a draw - 116-116.

The only two rounds that were debatable in my mind were rounds 2 and 12. In round two Belgacham pressured and landed with a variety of flurries but at this stage Barker was landing with heavy authoritive shots and but Belghcham nicked it.

Then half way through the 12th round Barker landed a strong three punch combo and made Belgacham miss with more than he had in previous round, the Frenchman pressured all the way and landed some heavy shots with 40 seconds to go and chased him to the end of the round but I think Barker was just ahead in that round.

I could have scored either the 2nd or 12th either way which still would have made it a draw in my book. What say ye??

What fight were those judges watcging?

Didn't one judge have it 118-110? That's shocking.

I also scored it a draw.

118-110 was very strange indeed, 116-114 fair enough because much of Affifs work was crude and could Barkers lighter range finders could have caught the eye but I would love to see the card of the guy that gave it 118-110!

I was hoping it would have been a draw as i backed in in running at 30-1!
Although i did think Barker won it 116-114, he's not World class that's for sure.

Any chance of Andy getting a shot at him?

I see no reason why not!

Anyone know how the french lad got the shot at the title? I thought the ebu have some rule that you cant be coming off a loss to fight for their title?
Barker fought like he didnt want it at times.

He supposed got it because all the fighters above him were listed as 'unavailable' wit the EBU OR turned the fight down.

well that would just have it a single round swing away from being a draw. In a fight like that plenty of rounds could go either way.

Interestingly even on a predominantly British forum like BoxRec 40% of poster think that it was either a draw or Affif as the winner.

I think Barker deserved to get it by the skin of his teeth. Had it been a draw I wouldn't have said it to be unfair. I think it's fair to say he was exposed. He's been put down by bums, had yer man any bit of pop in his shots and Barker would have been on his arse. Macklin would rape this guy. Lee would beat him too imo. I'd have him as slight favourite against Duddy.

if you had swapped Affif for John last night there would have been a KO - and a new Irish champion.

I'm sure Darren will try to avoid going toe to toe with a slugger like Duddy again. Much like Lee/Vera he will learn from it and will make a more conscious effort to box and not brawl in the future. Duddy would have beaten the Lee that fought Vera too, he won't beat him now imo.

No the EBU don't have that rule, the IBF on the otherhand do but are willing to break it when it suits them(eg. Judah vs Mayweather being for the IBF title).

The fight was made at about 2 weeks notice and most fighters wouldn't have been ready. However as far as I'm aware Andy Lee's team weren't even contacted and he's ahead of Belghecham in the rankings(only just mind you ).

I was surprised even the ridiculously patriotic sky commentators were calling it as very close. I didnt see anything in him that would make me think any of the irish guys couldnt do a number on him. Duddy and Macklin would knock him out. Andy should beat him easy on points

sky are usually terrible but I remember they voicing their dismay over the scoring... I still had Barker winning it, though it was very close

Lee is looking for a shot at Barker now. Lee has a win over Barker in the amateurs from the European Championships back in Croatia in 2004. He won 18-8 and had a broken right hand in that fight apparently

Barker would beat Lee. I honestly think Lee is no good at all.

how good is 'no good at all'??

Lee is possibly good enough to challenge for a world title, but i don't see him actually winning one. Lee still doesn't seem to be able to fight on the inside which doesn't help his cause. So i think he'll get beaten again by a less skillful fighter who can turn a fight into a brawl. I hope i'm wrong about him not winning a world title!

I find it hard to see Lee winning a world title, mainly because of his lack of stamina.

If world title fights were over 6-8 rounds he'd be a cert, but they're not.

Barker, on the other hand wouldn't be able for Lee at all. I think Lee would stop him mid-rounds.
