Right, had laser eye surgery done 2 weeks ago.Everything went perfect, better than 20/20 etc etc.

My licence has restriction 01 on it that states that I need corrective lenses.
Do I need to go get a new licence seeing as I no longer need them?

Well it would be a good idea. If you aren't wearing them and your licence says you should you could be brought to court if the Garda doesn't believe you. Give the tax office a ring.

Youll need a cert from the eye practioner man saying youve gotten 20/20, or well above the prescribed limit, then go tax office and they should issue a new one without the code!

Got mine done nearly 5 years ago, never bothered to change the licence

I thought 20/20 was in relation to field of vision rather than long/short sighted problems

Sounsa a bit OTT law-fearing to me. I know loads of people who've had it done and never even thought of changing licences. A Guard would want to be some officious p7ick to drag you to court for it (and I don't even think there wsould be a case to answer)

Why ? vision is fairly important when driving. Some people have really bad eyesight and cant see very far in front of them. Are you happywith these peopl driving around you wthout their glasses on?

Do people really drive around without their glasses on though?? I don't think so. People are a lot more likely to be driving around with no licences at all.

It would cost you to replace the licence, or have it renewed in anycase. If for some reason it did end up in court, then you would simply show that you no longer need prescriptive eye correction anymore. Your licence will be up for renewal at some stage anyway.

I got it done and never changed my license. Never really gave it much thought. I really wouldn't worry about it.

Edit: On second thoughts, maybe when you're going to renew your license one day, you could also bring a letter from the optician that says you don't need glasses for driving. Just a suggestion, rather than going out of your way to change something that seems trivial.

Double edit: Cork Girl bet me to it!

I had laser eye surgery 2 1/2 years ago and haven't bothered to change my licence - the photo even still shows me wearing glasses. I'm about to move address so I'll get the photo sorted when I update the licence for that. I wasn't intending to do anything about the 01 restriction until I have to renew the licence at ten years.

I actually got pulled over for a fixed penalty speeding ticket 10 months ago. Wasn't wearing glasses (obviously as I don't need them to drive). Guard checked the address on my licence, didn't look at the groups so apparently didn't notice the restriction - not an issue it seems.

At the very worst you'd just have to get a sight test and produce a copy of the prescription in court (as already said) - unless there is some obscure offence of not keeping your licence details up to date.

Technically your license requires you to wear glasses, so technically you could get done for not wearing them. Your medical condition has changed, so you should change the details on your license, just as if your sight had gotten worse.

Are they going to make you take out a contact lense to prove that you are wearing lenses?? No they will not. Things have changed with regards eye-sight and technology over the past decade or more and the regulations with regards driving licences have not. Realistically, it is most relevant for elderly drivers, who need to have their licences renewed more regularly. For these drivers, it is imperitive that their vision is adequate to be on the road.

It doesn't cost to get your licence updated. All you need is 2 new pics and the form, though for some reason I've always got the same pic back when ever I've had to update my licence.

Why would you want to go to court when you can get it changed for free.

If you are driving somewhere other then Ireland they won't be so easy on you if you have a 01 endorsement and aren't wearing glasses and carrying a spare pair.

I just got a letter from the clinic stating that I got Lasek surgery done there on x date. Stuffed it in with my license. No cost, no admin, and no hassle.
