"We finally have some official details regarding Activision and Treyarch’s next installment in the franchise. While many of us expected it to be titled Call of Duty: World at War 2, the next installment will instead be titled Call of Duty 7: Black Ops.

The game, as we expected, takes place in the time between World War II and present day, touching on famous historical events like Treyarch has been doing for the franchise all along. It’s being reported that game will allow the player to play as part of the Special Air Service (SAS) and that there will be a close combat oriented mission in the Iranian embassy during the 1980’s.

Here’s the snippet taken from the Tek9 report on Activision (via MapModNews):

“… With a scheduled release date of November 2010 the game is still in full development but undisclosed sources over at Activision have stated that “Call of Duty 7 will be set in recent history, between WWII and present day”. Besides this information the sources have also confirmed that some missions will take us to Cuba and South America, hinting again in the direction of a Cold War / Vietnam based game.

Also revealed was that in certain missions the players are able to play as a member of SAS (the Special Air Service), the principle special forces unit of the British Army. One of these SAS missions pitches you in close combat during a mission in the Iranian embassy in London during the 1980’s.

It has also been confirmed that Call of Duty 7: Black Ops will feature the popular zombie mode, in which players get to shoot down hordes of zombies, a feature that could not be seen in the Infinity Ward produced Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

And last but not least, dedicated servers will also be part of the new Call of Duty game, much to the delight of PC Gamers across the world. After Activision fired Vince Zampella and Jason West from Infinity Ward, it seems like they are taking yet another step back from the direction they had taken with Modern Warfare 2 by re-adding dedicated servers.”

Although Infinity Ward has made the more successful games of the franchise and better single player games, I’m leaning to favoring Treyarch now a little more because of what they do for the fans. Infinity Ward gets to play with the modern war theme, but Treyarch is forced to play in history which many players are tired of. Yet, they make the best of it and include very important gameplay elements that IW fails to do.

Call of Duty: World at War included co-operative gameplay in its story. Not only that, but it was 4 player! Adding to the co-op fun, a feature I deem necessary in most current generation shooters, they even included another co-op mode in Nazi Zombies, which again let players team up with three friends to defend a position.

Modern Warfare 1 and 2 however, included no co-op play in their campaigns and the spec ops mode in MW2 was limited to 2 players. Making the situation worse for PC players, IW and Activision would not allow for dedicated servers, something that was certainly not in the best interest of gamers. Treyarch is definitely bringing it all for their next CoD game and they are seemingly bringing back Nazi Zombies and dedicated servers for PC players. While there’s no word yet on co-operative gameplay in the campaign, we expect it to be there like in World at War.

Good old treyarch! Looking forward to this, especially zombies. Hosted servers are badly needed too.

Yay! I always preferred WaW to MW1, and MW2 when all the problems were widespread a few months back

Yeah the rumors are looking good for the the cod.
Never liked treyarch in previous titles at the time, but looking back/playing waw its alot better fps. IW made a bad game with mw2, while enjoyable its just broken in so many ways.
    The rumors that are coming out about cod7 are looking good;
killstreaks not stackable, ie discourage camping
no knife default, stop commando lunges and even reg knife range

plus the time frame their talking about, end of ww2, throught the cold war and up to the 1980s, with alot of global insability, could make for very interesting single player.
And I can't wait to see the transition of the maps in multiplayer from ww2 to 80s.

I wonder how much of this games setting was treyarchs idea?
I cant imagine they like being lumped with making the done to bits historical shooter genre and would much rather get a shot at the somewhat less over done modern types.

With IW winning no fans among gamers with the terrible idea for no dedicated servers, no beta testing, endless hacking / patching and with the rumors IW is falling to bits these days it wouldnt surprise me if treyarch pitched the "near" modern theme as if to say...."hey look we can do modern style shooters for cod just as good if not better then IW" in hopes of getting lined up to do the next modern warfare.

Hmmmmmm, I wouldnt be surprised at all. Anyways it doesnt matter cause IW staff will go to work for EA.... together they'll make medal of honor the most win packed game ever at which stage all video game designers will commit harry carrie in recognition of its utter awesomeness.

great news on zombies been brought back. i enjoyed world at war for a long time. still go back for a few games of zombies and there is still a nice few playing it on the ps3 (nothing compared to mw2 but still easy to get 4 player zombies)

getting rid of the ability to stab someone from 15 feet away is definitely a step in the right direction

I've played literally 5 minutes of WaW.

But I will be buying Treyarch's latest game this year.

Same here, went directly back to MW1. But I really like this setting for black ops so i'll probably give it a chance.

They have a few, I think. I still love MW2. Sure there's lots that annoys me, but I could say that about any game.

Yup.... but could you say it quite as much about any single other game?

I mean even the glitch list alone is as long as my arm. Never mind the fundamental flaws that originated with business driven decisions rather the game playing decisions.

I cant remember a developer creating a game with so many c**k ups that most importantly COULD and SHOULD have been avoided. Mistakes are normal and healthy as long as their learned from but they are unforgivable and down right amaturish when they could have been avoided and worst yet when they weren't learned from.
