What Are Banks actually for?

    Hi guys

I asked the wife to cash a personal check for €300.00 in our local A.I.B Bank to day. My account is not actually in that A.I.B branch, but I do a lot of lodgment's and transactions so my account, and the wifes account are known there.

She made a lodgment to my account via quick lodge and then went to a Teller and asked the cashier to cash the personal check I had given to her. The Teller said he couldn't cash the personal check as it was from another branch of A.I.B, so in order not to disappoint me the wife lodged that same personal check to her account, after lodging the check to her account she then drew the same amount of money from her account. She said to the Teller, you know my account is also in the same branch as my husband's, How come you were able to cover the transaction? .. The teller looked confused, but did not reply....

Has anything similar happened to you, I could understand if it was a different Named Bank!

    I don't see the problem.

What difference does it make of the two accounts are in the same branch?

She couldn't cash your cheque at that branch and so lodged the cheque to her own account.

The money she took out wasn't funds from the cheque she lodged, as that cheque still has to clear.

They were invented, correction: "updated" partly I believe by two brothers who wanted to make the funding of wars easier. Honest.
Although around for hundreds and hundreds of years, their systems were updated around Napoleon times to help the transfer of money safely - thus cheques were more a common thing.

    1. Two seperate transactions
    2. Account was cleared for funds.

If you go to a Bank with a check, Teller will skim the check to see if funds were available, I know there were more than enough funds to clear the check. The problem was he didn't skin the check to clear it.

As soon as the wife lodged it to her account, he skimmed it and it was then cleared... Whats the prob? or is it a Banks way of earning more money for another transaction?

They're for minding your money. Where else are you going to leave it? Under the floor boards? What if there was a fire?

    Good question.
Have you seen "It's a wonderful life"?

They always have weird technicalities like that. At a bar I worked at, my paychecks were from the Bank of Ireland. Also my bank.

If I wanted the money available immediately, I'd have to go to the bank, cash the check, then lodge the cash to my account. If I lodged the check, even at the same bank, it could be a few days before the money was in the account.

Perhaps if you started using cheques, you might have a lot less trouble.

    Withdrawal at the right moment?

I walked into my bank after work one Friday afternoon. Walked calmly past the fools queuing up, to the quick lodgment magic post slot. Stuck my cheque into the envelope and posted away, then walked out.

I love that damn hole in the wall.

<3 the way in the States you can lodge cash and cheques into an ATM. Only saw the inside of a bank twice for a whole summer over there thanks to those ATMs. The amount of time I've wasted queuing to do those above two tasks.... :(

Therefore; Banks are for wasting your time. :P

There's a distinct pattern building up here.

It's always useful to see it from the other point of view in these situations.
Large organisations dealing with a nation (at least) of people. Lotta cowboys out there OP, it's the world we live in, and unfortunately we need these hoops to jump through or you and me would have been ripped off long ago

AIB have this in Blackrock branch, haven't seen it in any other, they must be testing out the American way of doing things...

The sooner the banks are made to realise that we are their new owners and that we deserve customer service the better.

All these rules are petty and designed to screw the little guy - they don't apply to the Sean Quinns or the Seanie Fitz's of this world.

Yet when all is said and done it was their golden circle buddies who screwed the banks and not the little guy.

Time to break their cushy cartel, their cushy hours, their cushy subsidies , their cushy pensions.

The bank needs to be able to know where the money will be coming from in case there's a problem with the cheque. If your branch sends it back with a note saying the signatures don't match, then the branch that cashed the cheque has to eat the loss. If the cheque goes into an account and gets withdrawn, though, they can contact the customer and explain the situation. That's why they can't hand over cash, but they can once it goes through an account: there's somewhere to go if the cheque turns out wrong.
