    Hi
Maybe I have the wrong area for this thread , if so forgive me.
I was wanting to gain a language to qualify for An Garda Síochána?

Basically I failed my Irish in the Leaving Cert back in 1999 and now I require a language.

I have done French only up to my Junior Cert so I do not know which or what I should do.
I would hope to be able to sit the exam for the current year 2010.

If anyone could offer me some advice I would be much obliged.

    Thanks in advance....

The application for external candidates is done via www.examinations.ie but the deadline for entry to the 2010 leaving cert has passed except in very exceptional circumstances. Also the orals are on very soon. They do hold orals in May for people who missed them due to illness but realistically unless you are a very quick learner you're looking at 2011, but there's no harm trying to pull a few strings :) if you can

I can't imagine that you would pass French or Irish in the 2010 Leaving Cert if you haven't used either language in over ten years...

Regardless of this, you will have to sit the Leaving Cert exam as an "external student". In order to do this, you must apply to the State Exams Commission. Unfortunately, you are too late, as the closing date for applications has passed. Have a look here for more information - http://examinations.ie/index.php?l=en&mc=ca&sc=ec You can try ringing them to see if you can be accommodated. The phone number is on that site.

If you aren't able to sit the exam this year, I would suggest that you take some classes in whichever language you decide to pursue as soon as possible. Perhaps take a 'French for beginners' course in the summer. Then in September, get grinds or enrol somewhere that teaches French.

    Best of luck with it!

There's a forum on boards.ie called Garda Recruitment, you might find some more info there?
