3GS boot loop conundrum

I'm really just looking for opinions before I take my next step.

Story so far: I have a JB 3GS from Orange [UK]. 3.1.2 with newer baseband. Used Blackra1n to JB. I use it on T-Mobile in the UK.
After a resetting network settings it got stuck in the now infamous blackra1n boot loop cycle. http://modmyi.com/forums/general/701356-blackra1n-boot-loop.html
recovery mode (connect to itunes) > blackra1n splash screen > times out > back to recovery mode (connect to itunes) in a continuous cycle.

Apparently the only way to get out of this is to let Blackra1n run continuously, you might just get lucky and it breaks out. No joy for me after 2 weeks.

I have tried every thing I can think of to get it out (irecovery, different machines, from a MAC, etc....) I stupidly didn't have my SHSH on sauriks server - being honest I didn't know the significance of it at the time. My bad for not researching the whole JB scenario properly.

The options I can see are:
    1. Keep tying Blackra1n - might work might not.
    2. Wait for a new JB to be released. The untethered JB that Geohot has waiting in the wings might do the trick but then again it might not. Or it might not be released or might be delayed for a long period.
    3. Verify that Orange will unlock my phone then upgrade to 3.13 and go through the unlock cycle. Live with an unlock but not a JB.

Thinking about it, my only hard and fast requirement is to have it unlocked so option 3 is sounding like the bet if Orange will unlock it. In any case given the option of a 3.1.2 JB or 4.0 I think I'd prefer the new features in 4.0 - I am by no means a power user.

Any opinions or obvious flaws in my logic?

If your main reason to jb is to unlock then option 3 is the best.
If Orange will unlock your phone officially then this will also add to the resale value , that's if you ever wanted to sell.

A couple of members have also had this blackra1n boot loop problem , and could not remember if the stored their ECID shsh on CYDIA , only to find they had when they tried a restore via CYDIA .
The option "make my life easier" during the initial CYDIA install was a harder to deny than accept , you may have your hash files saved.

Thanks mixednuts. I tried to restore by changing the host file method just in case I had actually saved it. No joy.
I called Orange and they will unlock it for me but there is a catch. The MSISDN/IMSI needs to be linked to the IMEI for at least 3 months.

Because I haven't used that sim in the phone for a while it timed out on whatever system they use to record this. I had them manually linked today when I called but I now have to wait the 3 months. Bugger, but at least I have a way out.

3 months  .. Ah well perfect timing for 4GHD release .
    Sell your 3GS offically unlocked . Pick up a 4GHD . Simple !

Oh happy days, at last I've gotten out of this loop with a JB and unlock complete. It wasn't a smooth ride for me so I'll detail what I did for anyone who is in the same position.
It turns out that you can hack a custom 3.1.3 IPSW so that it wall allow you to restore to 3.1.3 but stay on your old bb (05.11.07 for me) Great, that means I can unlock.

    Details here.
    http://wikee.iphwn.org/howto:removellb

Did the spirit JB then I downloaded blacksn0w by adding http://blackra1n.com as a source in cydia. However when you do it this way you can only find blacksn0w RC1. For me that locked up the phone and when it rebooted it got stuck on the apple logo.
So had to restore to the custom IPSW again. After a few failed attempts I realised that this was RC1 and instead found RC2 by adding source http://cydia.pushfix.info

Did this, ran blacksn0w RC2 but now my phone couldn't pick up a network and was constantly 'searching'. This was regardless of what sim I used.

Agggh. After a bit of a Google it turns out that this can happen if bb 05.11.07 is corrupted. You can manually flash the bb files. Details here:

    http://extechblog.wordpress.com/2010/03/23/blacksn0w-crashes-3-1-2-firmware-05-11-07-baseband-3gs-no-shsh-on-file-solution/

Success at last and I now have my unlock as well as an unteathered JB.
One thing I have noticed this that it takes longer than it used do for the phone to pick up a network. It sits in 'searching' for over 90 seconds. It never took that long to attach before.

Glad I didnt upgrade to a stock 3.1.3.
