average cost of a wedding cake

I am wondering how much a 3 tier wedding cake for 120 people should cost. The thing is, I've been quoted 500 pounds sterling which seems like a LOT for a cake for 120 people and I think that the baker is just hiking up the prices because she knows its for a wedding.

Has anybody got recommendations for a good, reasonably priced baker in Donegal, Derry or Dublin?

    thanks!!

    Laura

    Depends on what you want.
This is the cheapest place I found in Dublin www.cakebox.ie if you go for their plain cakes (no decoration).
If you want any sort of decoration, the prices I've found start at 350/400 euro for a 3 tier cake and can go up to over 1000 euro depending on what you want.

I went directly to some local bakeries also and got the same prices.

    Hiya,

BC is right, wedding cakes start around 350 and can go up to any price depending on size, detail, etc. The less detail on a cake the cheaper it is always going to be, you're paying for their time and craft, not just the cost of ingredients, even though the ingredients can be costly enough.

I would have said that Derry or Donegal might offer cheaper prices but if you have a scout around Dublin competition might mean you get cheaper quotes there.

as others have said €250 is about the minimum you would pay for a 3 tier, and they would be fairly small diameters. I paid €270 for 6", 8" & 10", decorated fairly simply, that was enough to feed about 60-70 people. The quality of the cake was great and it looked fab (we decorated it with fresh flowers as to have the same cake with sugar flowers would have cost €500!)

If budget is a factor, try M&S or Asda, Sainbury, Tesco. you are in a better position as the M&S here only do fruit cake and you can't order in specially, but in NI you can get sponge cake or fruit and can order in advance. They have very simple decoration but this can easily be jazzed up with fresh flowers, flower picks, ribbon etc. If I remember correctly, 3 tier in the small, med, lge, sponge, plain icing was around £130 stg.

I got mine for 150 euro in Black forest bakey in Kilcock. 12" choc buscuit cake, 10" carro, 8" lemon maderia, all were lovely and it was the cheapest i could find but taste great.

Not for everyone, but M&S do the plain cake tiers which can then be decorated with your choice of ribbon etc.

Much much cheaper option and will look just as pretty :)

That sounds brilliant. Was actually going to pop in as I walked past the other day but wasn't sure how I'd transport the cake from there to Dublin. Did you organise transport yourself or have far to go?

    Hey OP,

I'm looking in the Donegal/ Derry area too. I live in Dublin so I'd consider there, but like yourself I'd prefer the lack of hassle in getting someone local who will deliver.

My buget is around 300 euro for enough cake to feed 140 people

So far I have found http://www.catering4u.ie/Weddinggalleryweddingcakes-Catering4U.html

She is in Buncrana and the average price for her 4 tier is 305, but she would probably go down to 250 for a 3 tier if its a simple design.

I am also looking at http://www.thecakepantry.com/

For my budget she has suggested a top tier for cutting and then 120 cupcakes. With this and the hire of the stand it would be under 300 euro. I think I prefer their more modern designs- but depends what your after...

We are going to see 2 places in Donegal tomorrow.
Mocklers (Cake n Bakes) in Killybegs and another place (cant remember the name right now) in Ballybofey and going by provisional prices were less than the prices on here for more people.

    Will post back on Monday

    Hi Zefer,

I was wondering if you have any feedback for us? :)

    Hi

Well, we got quoted €350 and €400 for a 3 tier cake over the weekend that would be enough to feed approx 150 - 170 people. That was iced and decorated etc. The prices vary obviously depending on what you want done to the cake, etc.
The quality (taste and presentation) were different in both, drop me a pm if you want my opinion on which was better.

Goyas! goyas.ie it's on Kirwans Lane near the Kings Head and merchants rd/bridge st. Both my sister and aunt got their cakes there... I enjoyed helping with the tasting samples my sister brought home. :)

Prices depend on how big the cake is so if youre going for 2 tier it'd probably be 250-300 but Im sure the shop would be able to help you with what size it should be for the amount of guests you have.

There is not such a thing as an average price for a wedding cake. :) It sounds like "an average temperature in the hospital". But usually you get what you pay for. It you are looking for a cheaper option then do not expect to get something "top of the range" with an "avalanche of sugar roses" (as one of my potential clients once requested). Lol If you are stuck for money it's ok to get your cake tiers in M&S but then at least make sure that you know how to assemble them properly.

I know a very good cake decorator in Galway. If you are interested just pm me.
