    thanks.

    Do you mean the Harvard bibliography style, or do you mean you want your article to look like it's in the Quarterly Journal of Economics?

    hi Time,

    I basically want my references to look like (Surname year)
    I heard aer.bst will make that happen but I hear i need to put in some
    packages at the start namely harvard, aer, aertt, and ulem packages.

    using plain at the moment and it looks kak as it puts a number in.

    any ideas?

    Yeah you will need to copy the harvard.sty files (read here) or install the economic pacakge (read here) or in fact I think it's a default in natbib.

    Natbib will probably do it for you once it's installed. Your basic code should look like this:

    \documentclass{article}
    \usepackage{natbib}
    \begin{document}

    My favourite article ever is \cite{solow56}. The theoretical contribution was way better than \cite{mrw91}.

    \bibliographystyle{harvard}
    \bibliography{mybibfilename}
    \end{document}
