Jailbroken iPhone won't connect to Vodafone (was O2)

The problem I am having (& it's a biggy) is that my iPhone won't connect to the internet... and I have no idea why....
OK it's a JB O2 phone used on Vodafone network but it should still connect.

2 days ago I changed from Vodafone Simply to Perfect Choice Access Plus so I would have the 2GBs included.

Tech, support won't help cos it's JB & not one of theirs, the only thing they keep telling me is that I need to d/l their carrier settings  via iTunes but they can't tell me how to do that except by updating to 3.1.3 which obviously I can't do... I have manually input all the settings but it still won't work...

When I first got it, months ago, and JB it, I could connect to Vodafone no problem using the pay by the KB as you go option, but found it was always on, didn't have the GBs included in package so first bill was in the €100's:eek::eek:

Changed a setting to stop that and haven't connected again until now with the more expensive package GBs included... well, except by wifi... which I don't have at home anyway!! Have manually re-inputted Vodafone Live settings in 'network' 'cellular data network'...

Vodafone Live settings seem to be the problem... maybe..... I wish someone could help, it's driving me nuts!!

    Specs
    Phone type: 3G, 16gb
    Model: MB500B
    Serial (1st 5 digits) : 88915
    Modem Firmware: 04.26.08
    Current Firmware: 3.1.0
SIM you wanna use: Vodafone (unlocked from O2)

Vodafone sent me these settings which don't work, they say it's because it JB & they won't help...

To set up a Vodafone live! connection:

    1. From the iPhone Home screen, tap Settings.
    2. Select General.
    3. Select Network.
    4. Select Cellular Data Network.
    5. Under Cellular Data enter live.vodafone.com as the APN (leave username and password blank).

    iPhone MMS Settings
To set up an iPhone up for MMS:

    1. From the iPhone Home screen, tap Settings.
    2. Select General.
    3. Select Network.

    4. Under MMS enter mms.vodafone.net as the APN (leave username and password blank).
    5. Select MMSC and enter http://www.vodafone.ie/mms.
    6. Select MMS Proxy and enter 10.24.59.200:80.
    7. MMS Max message Size and MMS US Prof URL can be left blank.

try inputting 'dublin' into both the username and password fields directly below the APN.

Is that the that top Vodafone Live APN setting or the MMS APN, cos there are two?

Try it using the 'hs.vodafone.ie' APN with username and password as 'vodafone'. Make sure to switch off and on your phone once you change APN details.

While you really want to be using 'Live' (as only Live gives you the free data roaming), it seems as if many new VF customers have difficulty using Live until an age restriction is removed from your account.

I presume you can make voice calls?

Oh and if you only changed plan 2 days ago, you may not be able to avail of the data bundle till your next billing date so might get charged!!!

    Hi bkehoe,

Thanks for that, not sure about the age restriction, will ring them up and ask when I get it re-jailbroke & unlocked again, having some problems but only because I don't have wifi & Cydia is acting up... someone advised me to update to 3.1.2 and it might work, not sure what difference that'll make but the fone will be clean & fresh so no harm anyway as long as it works!!

I'll try those new settings, want to make sure I am connecting to V. Live and not the pay by KB option as that would be a disaster!! Seems like some of the setting I am being given are for the other option...

Oh, thanks for the warning about the pay-day thing but I had actually updated a while before, it was 2 (now 4) days ago when the new action came into place:D

Nice day in Wexford today isn't it?:D:D:D

p.s presume you are talking about the top cellular data APN settings and not the MMS APN settings?

    Hey,

Well within Ireland the APN I suggested you try will work fine from the 2GB data bundle. However, you're probably still on 'Simply' until your next billing data so just test it for something small.

Question - when you were trying it with the 'Live' APN, when you used Safari did you notice if the address in the address bar changed to something unusual after you tried to access a website? This is a sign of the account restriction.

Tip; if you do upgrade to 3.1.2 make sure you keep the old baseband by using a custom IPSW. Ultrasn0w is a much more reliable unlock than blacksn0w in my experience. But this is a topic for another thread. Do not under any circumstances upgrade to 3.1.3 unless you get O2 to unlock your phone!

Gone cloudy in this part of WX! :(

On Perfect Choice Access Plus for the last 4 days now... didn't try to use Safari so not sure about that... just tried to connect to Facebook as is quickest test...

Will give Cydia another go later, have installed Blackra1n now, so will get Cydia from that, will try to d/l ultrasn0w one more time but if it still doesn't work I'll have to go with Blacksn0w as fone out of action for 2 days now... no contact sucks, single Mother with child etc...

I noticed that since vodafone has got the iPhone, everytime I connect my phone to my laptop I get a message asking me to update my carrier settings, I too have a JB O2 phone so I haven't done the update.. If you permenantly ignore the 3.1.3 update message you may be offered the carrier settings they are talking about? Not sure if I'll kill the JB, I haven't risked it.

Well good luck with it! :)

But remember to use blacksn0w you will need the newer baseband (modem firmware); it won't work with 4.26.08 that I noticed you had in another thread. You would need to update with the official Apple 3.1.2 file to get the new baseband 5.11.07 which is what blacksn0w unlocks.

Updating the carrier settings will not affect your JB but it will remove your access to the Celluar Data Network menu and thus remove your ability to change APN. The 'Live' APN is used in the official carrier file. I still use a custom carrier file instead of the official one.

    IT WORKS!!!:D:D:D

Updatded to 3.1.2, jailbroke with redsn0w then re-jailbroke with blackra1n... had to go back to re-install 3.1.2 & re-jailbreak with blackra1n and finally was able to unlock with ultrasn0w.....after numerous attempts!!!

Input V.Live settings & finally.... it all works!!

Thanks so much for all the help :D:D:D

As mentioned above, the following settings should work:

    Settings/General/Network/Cellular Data Network

    Cellular Data
    APN: live.vodafone.com
    username: dublin
    password: dublin

If not you can always try using a different carrier file. Instructions in post #1 here

Can you use vodafone live in any other handset with your sim card?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 461 ✭✭iPink

that's interesting that you should ask that because I was just on to Customer Service AGAIN (they practically know my voice by now:rolleyes:) & they say I have an oldish SIM card which MIGHT be causing the problem... sounds like straw-clutching to me!!!

Well in fairness VF have been saying to quite a few people that they need new 128K sims. I got my sim in April 09 and its always worked fine. Simchange is free in any VF store so may as well do it just in case!
