Facebook in the college

Not complaining about it being blocked or anything, it makes sense, but is there like a window of use for it? Because I've been able to access the site the odd time on college computers but not at others. It seems a tad harsh that I can't access the site at 8pm in the middle of the Easter holidays. I'm confident I'll survive but :pac:

Basically the ban is on some PCs and not others, mainly because of how ineffectual Computer Services are.

As far as I know, it also depends on the number of IP addresses in use at the time. SO if you're in the library and only two of the computers are being used, then it is sometimes available

I was using an IT account, in one of those open access rooms at the back of the IT building, ground floor.

The IT computers in this case are those in IT101 and IT102, not IT106 where you login using your normal username and password.

Ah I see. Didn't realise IT students did a module in "pissing around on Facebook".

Or perhaps it's due to different departments having different requirements?
Some might not mind it being available in the evenings, some might not want it at all.
Ie. 1st Arts muppets filling IT or Physics labs when folk doing those courses need the machines and software packages to crunch numbers for assignments?

And if it's blocked, that's pretty effective in my book. Wan teh squid.

Anyone making a case that Stalkbook has real academic merit is delusional.
The fact it is accessible at all is because too many gits would whinge about 'censorship' and 'freedom'.
....just like Bebo a few years back - which is now facing the axe because 12 year olds don't have credit cards or click on banner ads.

you wanna take that back? I have actually done research projects on Facebook for two different modules in two different years.

Oh, and its not blocked in the Cairnes for this reason

It's part of the Next Generation Technologies module, of course!

facebook is banned from 9am to 6pm monday to friday (including holidays)...you can get onto it using proxy websites tho.. ;)

Well, yeah - when it's in the context of the primary purpose of limited resources being disadvantaged by a substantial group of people's sometimes excessive use for social and personal reasons.
The fact it it is blocked during the core work hours where there are higher demands and competition for resources is confirmation of this.
It's not like you are unable to access facebook by other means.
Mobile operators are starting to do decent-ish data plans, and €1-2 get's you a seat in one of the netcafés around town.
Would you go into the city library and update your facebook page while there was a queue of people behind you waiting to use it for looking up the book catalog?

There's a number of campus wide proxies that don't block it either ;)

I totally agree with it being blocked on campus computers. There's no sense in having students tie up computers when other students have a genuine need for them. Although, there is the counter-agrument of censorship etc. I think having the 9-5 ban is a decent enough way to tackle this, but wouldn't it be better to just ban it for LAN access? If students want to waste time on their own laptops on the wifi, who cares?

aaah but they can't just block facebook altogether. fair play to them for doing it during the busy hours like (the lack of horrendously long queuing is great now). but if they banned it altogether it wouldnt really be fair. i mean, my friend doesnt have a laptop, so facebook in the library is the only way of her getting onto fb!
