Just wondering is there any way I can sync my ipod to two laptops? I have all my music on my old laptop, bought a new one and would like to use the new one for syncing my ipod now? When i go to sync ipod with my new laptop, it says I will have to delete songs from ipod and I do not want that
Or is there a way to transfer my itunes library from old laptop to new one and sync my ipod then but not put on the old songs twice if you get me.
    Sorry for the confusing post.

I would love to know this too, I need to change where my ipod is synced to as I've dont have internet connection for my pc anymore so I need to change it to my mac which does.

I have a feeling there is no way around this. Apple support doesn't 'support' ipod users directly.

Do you want to use Both laptops to store music on? or migrate the music from the old laptop to the new one.

If it is the former, if the OS's are the same I think you can sync your ipod to two libraries (on both machines) - will check if necessary. If it is the latter, you can copy your music folder(s) from the old to the new either over the network or using a portable storage device such as a USB Hard Drive.

If you are moving between os's then the portable HD copy is your best bet. After copying, start itunes with (I think) ctrl and create a new library or point your library to your new music folder and "add to library".

Thanks for the reply. I would prefer to move the music from the old laptop to the new one for good and then use the new laptop to sync my ipod. So what you're saying is to use an external hard drive?
Sorry I'm not the most technologically gifted!

Apologies Galaxy if I am strutting on your query turf.....

I am changing computers permanently so I need to sync music and do all the usual stuff on a new mac.

The only way I know is to plug it in, cut off sync asap and check "Manually manage my songs". Then you need third party apps such as iPhoneBrowser (google for best for your model) to rip music off to new computer. Then resync, it will wipe it and put old music now on computer on it.

They do of course support iPod users. They just don't help them to do what iTunes/iPod was designed specifically NOT to do.......

Sync all the music from the old computer to the ipod,

Then download one of these programs on your new computer..

    Thanks Pajero12,
I went with your option seemed the easiest. I will have to pay $19.99 as the first 100 songs only are free but I don't mind. I used the programme copytrans, very simple, Thanks again!!

Dont pay it,there are other free programs...hope its not too late:(

I did but its only 15e so not too worries. I looked up a few and it was simplest to use as I am a bit slow when comes to computers.
Now though, i tunes won't let me sync my ipod after uploading the first 100 songs from ipod to new laptop. Any way around this?

is itunes not picking up the ipod?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 78 ✭✭galaxyminstrels

Yep it is but it is giving me the option of erase and sync or transfer purchases. I know erase and sync is not the right one but have I not already transferred purchases when i downloaded the software?!! Sorry for all this hassle now.

First of all did it transfer all the music to your computer?

does it give you the option of manually managing your music(on the screen with the big picture of the ipod? Its the bottom option)

It only transferred 100 of the songs and then said I would have to pay the 15e for use of the program. I presumer thats being delivered or something. I have manually manage music checked. Such a long process, nearly better off buying a new ipod to use for new laptop !!

You have all your music on another pc? Do you have access to an eternal hard drive and if not is the old pc still connected to the internet (as well as the new one?). If the answer was yes to any of these questions then trying to rip music from the iPod was the wrong solution!

Yes all music is on old laptop. The old laptop isn't connected to the internet at the minute but if it was, would be on the same broadband. And nope I don't have access to an external hard drive.

So you can connect it to the internet? Then you should be able to transfer your files to the other laptop through the wireless network. What operating system is the old laptop running?

The old laptop is windows XP and new one is Windows 7.

Sound, do you have one of those mobile broadband dongles or a router? If it's a dongle, the following isn't relevant:

This page shows how to share folders over a network on xp. The folder you want to share is your iTunes one that contains all the music.

You picked the wrong one!. Its a router. Eircom broadband.

No worries, hope it works ok. How much do you have to transfer? I have 30 GB in my library, that would probably take quite a while. As long as you don't mind waiting.

Think I have about 15 or so. Good thing someone could tell me what to do or I would have been off buying a new ipod for new laptop as have tried literally everything ha. Thanks again.

No worries, if worst came to worst I'd buy an external hard drive or a usb stick. Let me know how you get on anyway!

Would it work if I had a memory stick? I have one with low memory so they wouldn't all fit but if I have one with more memory, would that do the same thing? Sorry for all the questions!

Yep, of course. It may be more time consuming though? How big is the memory stick? If it was 2 GB and you had 15 GB of music, it would take 8 transfers on and off the stick. Maybe that would be easier then figuring out how to transfer it wirelessly though.

The one I have is only 1gb. May invest in a new one. Should I be able to sync ipod then but not put the music on twice if you get me? Like be able to put on new stuff only.

It should be fine. I'm not exactly sure how it will work. iTunes may recognice that it's the same library of music or, maybe because it hasn't been synced with that pc it will wipe the iPod and resynch it, either way you'll have the same music on your iPod once it's been synced.

Since it's only a 1 GB memory stick, I'd spend a small amount of time trying to get the wireless transfer to work before you start the tedious job of transferring files with the stick!

Ok, thanks a mill for your help. The sharing files thing looks a bit complicated so looks like it will be using the good old usb stick to do it! Wish I was a bit more computer literate. Thanks again!
