MacBook or Windows Laptop?

    Any opinions folks?

Usual stuff. Browsing, Email, some MS Office, Photography, etc.

I can get a MacBook (with a nice discount for around €900) but I've been reading up on it and it pans out like this:

    MAC:

Pros: Fantastic graphics, design, longevity, etc.

Cons: Windows programs won't run on it, so it would mean buying Mac compatible versions.

    I'm soooo tempted though.:(

If you can get a discount like that, then the biggest facto (cost) is already out the window.

You can always Dual-boot the laptop with Windows. I would get the mac in this case.

You've got to seperate the software from the hardware.

For example when you say fantastic graphics are you talking about the eye candy in the OS/software or the actually graphics hardware in the laptop.

TBH it sounds like you want the Mac but are trying to persuade yourself. If you buy one and don't like it you will have no problem selling it in the future.

What Macbook are you referring to? There's no Macbook on the market that im aware of with fantastic graphics.

The best you can hope for is mid-range (9600M GT, actually a couple of years old at this stage) in the expensive MBPs, and the cheaper ones have 9400M which is about as low-end as discrete graphics cards get.

Yeah are you referring to the Mac OS's interface, vs. say Windows Aero? Or the actuall GPU

If you can afford it, I would wholly recommend getting a Macbook. If you are unsure or inexperienced with Macs, go into PC World or somewhere and try one out.

Yeah like Voodu Child was saying, Macbooks and great graphics just don't go together. A similarly priced Windows machine would have much better graphics

Thanks for the advice folks. Ah what the hell. I'll give it a lash so.

    Cheers,

    Freddie.

I have both. I have a macbook and a netbook (running XP). I use a windows vista machine at work. I love mac for personal use and will never go back to windows. its great for media and if you get iwork does a better job of WP, spreadsheet and presentations. Iphoto and imovie are excellent.
The only thing I use the netboo for is when I am travelling.

Probably gonna get locked (threadvamp) but here goes:

You can dual-boot OS X with Windows. So when you turn on your computer you can choose either OS X or Windows. You can triple boot it, as I have done, to run Windows 7, Windows XP or OS X. You can chuck in a few Linux versions too, if you prefer.

You can purchased Microsoft Office for Mac 2008, it's perfect for office stuff.

You can run Windows programs through VMWare Fusion or Parallels on OS X. No need to dual boot - install one of those programs, create a virtual machine, install windows on that VM and install your applications. For ~90% of people this is the ideal choice.
