Just wondering what are the best home DIY hair colour kits? I have med-dark brown hair and wanted to put a darker shade into it, darkest brown-verging on nearly black.

Anyone dye their hair this colour and recommend a brand to try?

Also, it can be permanent or semi. Is semi better for your hair?, i want to condition it not strip it.

Havent a clue about home colours but there wont be much of a difference in a semi & permanent - 2 semis on your hair = permanent! :) Just look at different boxes and see which colours you like the look of :D

If you don't mind a slight red tint in your hair when the light hits in, then I would say use Henna & Indigo. Henna will give your hair a red sheen, but if you have very dark hair already and mix it with indigo you will get a fantastic deep dark colour (do a quick search for images and you will see what I mean) :D

I'm not talking about black Henna here, you need to be very careful - if you do go down this route make sure you are buying a pure henna & indigo mix, there are many chemical "Black henna's" available which defeat the whole point of henna.

Henna will condition your hair and leaving it feeling and looking fantastic. It will gradually fade out over time.

I love Garnier Nutrisse Cream. I dye my hair often and am always very satisfied with it. My mum uses Movida by Garnier and is always happy as well. I also once used Garnier's 100% range... so basically I'm recommending any of the Garnier ranges!

It is people who buy hair colours without having a clue how they work, who are most likely to have hair disasters. :o
You probably know this yourself though, I think I remember you saying before that you're a hairdresser :)

OP if you are dyeing your hair darker then you should use a semi permanent.
They have less hydrogen peroxide and will last a number of weeks before needing to be re-done. Permanents fade too so either way you will be dyeing your hair every few weeks so semi-permanents are better.

Yes I am a hairdresser! Semi permanent colours Dont have amonia in them! Any that say they do are permanents!

Use a semi in your hair and it will condition it and give it a shine!

OK I was just saying. You said you "didn't have a clue about home colours" in your last post and also said that semi + semi = permanent which is not true if semis don't contain peroxide.

2 semis = permanent unless you let it wash out totally.

So if you wash your hair once a week say it will last 6 months - put another on and it will be permanent!

Sorry I meant amonia - all colour has peroxide in it! Its what makes the colour work!

Hi Op, I have mid to dark brown hair and to get it a bit darker I use the boots botanics hair dye, think its call bitter chocolate brown in semi permanent, its brilliant!

    I knew it! :P
Peroxide is what opens up the hair to let the colour in! :)
I am glad the hair companies are using ammonia less, any home colour I have used with ammonia has smelled really strongly.

Boots Botanics semi-permanent is my favourite and it's so cheap - only about €4 and sometimes they do the 2 for 1 offers. Smells really nice and makes the hair super shiny! I think bitter chocolate is the dark one.

I have brown hair but I like it darker too so I use Caca Brun henna from Lush. I top it up around every two months and my hair is so well conditioned from it, it was never this strong and shiny before. Caca Brun is dark enough for me but there is a darker one too. They cost around 13 euro. They are a bit messy but once you perfect a technique then it's grand.

apparently the stuff in lush is not 100% organic, im getting bad reactions from any chemicals, but thank you for your help, i will try it aswell to see what happens,im a tryer!!!!;)

Actually I am very prone to reactions to many shampoos and make up products so I know how **** that can be.

I personally don't have any reaction to the Lush henna but we're all different so I can't guarantee that you won't have a reaction either.

The staff in Lush are pretty sound for samples, if you went in and told them that you are prone to allergic reations, I'm sure they'd give you a small sample for a strand test - worth a try!

    Good luck :)
