Why is a head shop called a "head shop"?

The don't sell polynesian shrunken heads http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/7c/Shrunken_head.jpg nor do they give head. If your very lucky the might let you "go to the head" in there, but that's about it.

So, what's the story with the head in headshop?

Compound words describing various drug users often contain the word "head:" E-heads, smackheads, cokeheads etc., so that's one possibilty.

I suppose it could also be derived from the fact that the products they sell affect or "get you off" your head.

I think the origin is Jamaican, the products and paraphernalia they sell is for your 'head' (i.e. drugs, bongs, skins etc...)

It comes from the Latin word 'Headshopimus' which does not translate directly by scholars have described it as meaning "Deadly-buzz'ness".
