    Hi,
My mothers partner owns a house and asked me if I could find out how one would go about transferring the deeds to a relation without occuring huge costs such as in the region of €10,000 to the government ( so he was told be someone from the county council) . The reason he wants to do this is for legal matters. He was sued before and does not want to risk it again and losing his home. Any help is appreciated.

Such a transaction is a potential can-of-worms and would not be possible if there is a mortgage on the property. There are so many potential minefields here e.g. gift tax, stamp duty, etc. And that is besides the fact that it would be very difficult to maintain any future control over the property. This chap needs to speak to a solcitor because there is no easy fool-proof way of achieving his objective.
