[Article] Ryanair to Install Coin Operated Toilets

Ryanair is not the only airline looking to save money by lightening the load. Last October, All Nippon Airways began asking passengers to use the restroom prior to boarding to cut fuel costs. The airline estimated if all 150 passengers relieve themselves, the aircraft would be around 140 pounds lighter. Although it may not seem like much, when multiplied by an entire fleet the measure could potentially save the airline a lot of cash.

Case in point: According to the New York Times, American airlines once replaced bulky drink carts with ones that were 17 pounds lighter, saving 1.9 million gallons of fuel per year. In 2008 Northwest Airlines, now swallowed up by Delta, told the Times the airline saves $440,000 per year for every 25 pounds they removed from the aircraft.

No wonder airlines are so strict re: baggage allowance!!

As someone who suffers from IBS, a condition that is made worse by stress, and finds travel a trigger, I guess I won't be taking any more Ryan Air flights once this arrives. Paying to use the loo wouldn't be too bad, so long as you had the coin. However, removing toilets from planes is just crazy.

I feel like Mick O'Leary has just giving me, and fellow IBS (or Chrohn's etc.) sufferers, a big "F*ck You". Well cheers Mick!

They'll rethink this move when sales of overpriced coffee and bullseye baggies plummet.

Makes sense. I haven't had a piss on a plane since I was 7 years old.

    A week late;)

It's time for the EU to step in with regulation which stops them from doing this on flights longer than 1.5 hours.

I actually like Ryanair and use them a lot. I wouldn't be too bothered if they did this on shorter flights (e.g. - Ireland to the UK) but for some of their longer flights of 3 or 4 hours I think it would be unacceptable.

    why is it unacceptable?

most buses operating in IRL don't have toilets, doesn't seem to bother people.

i don't think this is a big deal at all, and certainly less note worthy than the increased luggage charge.

in all my times flying with any airline I think i've used a toilet once, and that includes 6 hr plus flights to the middle east.

Because in the worst case you can get off a bus.

Try jumping off a Ryanair flight for a roadside slash somewhere over the Irish Sea...;)

Planes can't stop off in Urlingford mid flight.

plus as previous poster said, a bus driver can always stop the bus somewhere in case of an emergency.

You'll still be able to go to the toilet on a Ryanair plane, just not as effortlessly and as carefree as before.

In my opinion, it's unacceptable for the reasons given in the 2 posts quoted below.

I myself fly regularly and have only used toilets on planes a couple of times ever. For the most part, the proposed changes by Ryanair won't effect me but I'd like to think that if I was on a long(ish) flight and had an unexpected urge that I wouldn't be stuck.

As I said in my first post, I do like Ryanair and use them a lot. I actually stick up for Ryanair when people start babbling on about the "hidden charges" and nonsense like that. But I think the toilet thing is awefully petty and I don't think Ryanair will gain a lot from it in the long run.

    Where's the problem?

The problem is the bit in bold. What if you don't have and can't get the proper change to use the toilet and there is still a couple of hours to go on the flight?

If someone has a rather urgent call of nature (if you get my drift) and there's only 1 toilet for 189 people and you have to sort out change to use it. I can certainly see how that could cause problems.

    extra charges for farting?

what will they charge for next?

How many people will be holding the door open for others? I know i would, will the cabin crew stop me?

I normally take a 1L bottle of water wit me on flights, i'd just resort to taking a near empty one and piss in that if i didn't wanna pay the euro

Cabin crew will offer change (at a cost) I'm sure, as well as currency exchange in case you only have Lats. I'm sure they'll also take debit and credit cards.

For safety reasons, the door needs to be easily opened/unlocked by the cabin crew. Something as simple as a coin or screwdriver should open the toilet door.

I think the cost of having the flight delayed/cancelled. the aircraft cleaned, then reloaded due to soiled seats will change Ryanairs mind.

I may be wrong, but I dont see this going ahead. Another PR stunt on Ryanairs part.

This shouldn't be called a toilet charge, it should be called a discrimination charge as it's totally signaling out people with bladder problems, ibs, and parents with young children.

All the above people can deal with the luggage charges, online check-in, hard seats etc. but they don't have the choice of holding on until the plane arrives at the destination airport and thus will have to pay the €1 in the likely event of needing the toilet. It's all well and good for the able bodied on this thread to say their okay with it as it's a charge they can avoid.

If O'Leary gets away with discrimination like this what's to stop him from charging white people a Euro for not being black, or black people a Euro for not being white.

I'd say that his is just more of O'Leary's legendary marketing spin to be honest.

i'll just bring an empty bottle and use that, if they try and press charges for indicant exposure i'll just say they infringed on my human rights or something like that it will be grand

I thought of that too but I guess without putting in a coin it will not be possible to lock the door after yourself - therefore need to go in pairs and have someone stand sentry:D

Same story keeps getting "trotted":D out over and over again, and it's more free PR - what annoys me about this crap (;)) is that the papers keep airing it.

Feck charging for Toilets thats just plain wrong. If Mick wants to make Money he should firstly charge obese passengers more I had one fat fecker sitting next to me recently and his entire weight must have been the same as a peitite polish girl on the otherside of me and I plus all our luggage.
